I just 100%ed/96 exits this on original hardware (MiSTer FPGA) and it's a good game but it doesn't hold a candle to Crash or DKC

>lives are pointless because you can just repeatedly farm any yoshi spawn for 1-ups. Even if you don't save, you can always back out of a stage you are struggling with to farm 1ups with no risk (your checkpoint is even saved too)
>yoshi coins are pointless because their progress doesn't save and sticking your neck out for 1/5th a 1-up is not worth it at all, esp since you get absolutely nothing if you miss even one. Meanwhile you can grab a 1up from any yoshi block in 10 seconds, or use the gray p-block to get 50 lives in a minute
>considering the game gives out powerups like candy and literally has the secret stage with a yoshi and 2 of each powerup, why even have mini Mario be the default? It's so trivially easy to get a mushroom, but it just adds tedium to do it before every attempt. Any time you respawn or start a stage, you should just default to Big Mario unless you get hit, and the stages should be balanced around it
>for how much focus on secrets and replaying stages there is, map movement is really slow, and the star road really doesn't save time vs. just manually navigating back
>a lot of the ideas just seem underutilized and not fleshed out. I love the fortress/castle stages but there's really not much to them

With that being said, I loved the way the game feels/controls, the art/music, the level design is pretty solid, and I can see why there is such a big romhacking scene for it. Getting secrets was a bit tedious, many were obvious, but a few I looked up as it's just not fun scouring every pixel

Overall, solid game, but I would not put it up there with the platforming greats.

Also I regret saying the game is too hard, I thought it would be extremely hard based on the Lemmy's Castle section (especially since I originally was trying without saving at ghost house), but in reality, that level is just harder than every special zone level and every lategame level in the game combined. I think Lemmy took me like 4 hours, and the whole special zone took me like 30-40 minutes.

I get stuck on an ice level in Donkey Kong, it's too slippery
same with the Super Secret Star World, I think the level is titled Mondo, 3rd level, also ice, with this jump to a single brick, but it's too slidey

The DKC ice stages are kinda bullshit because it's a massive difficulty spike where you have to beat like 6 stages without saving, whereas normally you can save after almost every stage as long as you have access to the save tile (or Funky to fly and backtrack to a save tile), but the ice stages are really hard and also doesn't unlock Funky or the save file until way deep in the island.

Mondo is really, really easy though, if you still somehow struggle, just grab Yoshi and some powerups. The final part would be hard if they didn't give you a star powerup to trivialize the entire section.

DKC1 sucks though. Everything that made DKC great started in 2. Actual reasons to fully complete stages, bonus hard mode post game worlds and secret final bosses. DKC1 is just standard mediocrity trying to dazzle with graphics.

You're literally the first person I've ever heard complain about Lemmy's Castle, let alone call it the hardest part of the game. I will say I remember struggling a lot with it... when I was six. I can see it being a bit hard if you're a total virgin to the game still getting used to the game's mechanics, and I'd even concede that it's something of a difficulty spike, but no way can it be called the hardest level. Go back and play it again now that you've acquired enough skill to beat the game and see if you still think the same.

It's actually a common complaint, and the Special Zone is not hard as you play it after you are much more experienced and have access to way more powerups and lives. Regardless, the stage layouts of Special Zone are just straight up easier than Lemmy's Castle which is a grueling gauntlet with the hardest bossfight in the game and zero checkpoints. Tubular is literally like 30 seconds long, and the hardest part is just figuring out where the P balloons are
