/vr/ was pretty divided on the AES Plus after it was announced. Now that the hype has died down a bit, what do you think? Still getting one? Still think it’s a waste of money? I’m not sold on those $90 cartridges. They obviously won’t be mask roms, but I may still cave and buy a few, since it’s the closest I’ll ever get to owning official copies of Garou and Metal Slug.
>>
>>12597025
Real og hardware is the only real experience
2026 reproduction is emulation.
>>
Just get a Mister if you don't care about owning the original stuff
>>
>>12597070
I cant get neogeo to run on my mister for some reason
>>
>>12597025
Have they still not revealed whats inside the carts? I have interest in the prospect of new games coming out for this and original systems.
>>
The HDMI output is locked to 60hz which slightly too fast. This hurts because it kills the competitive scene.
>>
>>12597079
It was rumored to be NOR flash I believe, but no confirmation as of yet.
>>
>>12597079
This is what’s stopping me from preordering one and some games. I’m not paying $90 for NAND flash shit, as the other anon said, it’s supposedly NOR (which is superior), but that remains to be seen.
>>
I've always been okay with the idea, so long as it and the new carts are backwards compatible with the original console/carts that satisfies my definition of "real hardware".

My only issue is that physically they went for a 1:1 copy of the original AES. Which, granted, most people probably want. But I always thought the thing was too damn big and this could have been an opportunity to slim it down a few centimeters. Also, lack of USB controller ports is a missed opportunity. Thanks to the supergun community there's already db15 converters and controllers out there but having it built in would have been a huge plus.

>/vr/ was pretty divided
it wasn't:
>anons discover it's just some asic shit
>retards tried to tell other retards that original neogeo hardware would DECREASE in price
>retards think owning reproductions of games released 30+ years ago are "official copies"
>retard keeps posting the same thread every few days hoping that people won't keep laughing at his daily shilling of cringe cancer produced by saudis

Only fembois and hipsters buy clone consoles.
It's OEM or nothing.

>mfw there will be people who will buy it and play all these SD games on 4K TVs through HDMI
>>
>>12597025
It will be using mask roms.
>>12598404
>Both Sega and Nintendo used ASICs (see Sega's countless Genesis models and the 1 chip SNES).
>It will, but not as much as you think.
>It depend on who is making the repro.
>>12598476
This is OEM.
>>
>>12597317
It's using HDMI 2.1 which has VRR support, it's not locked to 60Hz.
>>
>best steam deck model had price raised to almost $1000 today
>next gen consoles will cost over $1000 for sure and good gaming PCs will probably run you over $5000
Honestly, at $250, console rereleases like this are looking like a huge steal now. They have much lower specs, so aren’t held back by memory costs as much. If other gaming companies start rereleasing their old consoles and games, these could potentially become the only viable ways to keep gaming, outside of emulating shit on phones and low spec PCs. Modern gaming has become completely unaffordable. Even retro collecting is now cheaper, unless you’re after highly specific, low print games. Even those $90 cartridges will soon feel like a bargain, when next gen software pricing comes around. I’m definitely buying an AES Plus now. Gaming is no longer a middle class hobby.
>>
>>12598404
Why are you so invested in the price of plastic staying forever high?
>>
>>12598404
SNK are publishing and releasing them. They are objectively official copies.
>b-but it’s not the same people
I guess when Sega releases rom collections on new consoles those aren’t official either since most of sega’s old staff are long gone. Keep coping.
>>
>>12598548
Jotego said it's 60hz for compatibility reasons
>>
>>12599348
Whats real hardware then? 59.97Hz? VRR exists for reasons like this.
>>
>>12599096
emulation is better but for buyfags I see the value
>>
>>12599354
59.185606hz
>>
>>12599354
But if you don't have a variable sync monitor then you'll see tearing and stuttering. I guess the decision was to just lock it at 60hz so customers don't cry when they cook it up to there 2000s lcd
>>
It's possible that they add a dim switch for accurate frame rates i.e.

https://wiki.neogeodev.org/index.php?title=Framerate

But if MVS speed is not an option out of the box without mods, then SNK just dropped the fucking ball on a potential resurgence of competitive esports on neo geo
>>
>>12599358
>emulation is better
Absolutely. But with the dystopian shit they’re trying to implement right now (real ids) how long will the good times last? Right now, you can google any game you want and be playing it on an emulator in seconds. Ten years from now? Who the fuck even knows anymore? I think it goes without saying, but anyone that relies on emulation for most of their gaming needs should be making as many backups as humanly possible. They absolutely want you streaming everything on hardware you rent from them and owning absolutely NOTHING.
>>
>>12599379
Everything requires maintenance. With storing roms and emulators on HDDs you'll still need to transfer them to new drives every decade or two depending.

With physical hardware you'll need good electronics diagnostics. Even mask rom carts will need maintenance as tracers etc can deteriorate. But this is manageable.

The shittiest option is anything less reliable, i.e. flash roms, which are really at the mercy of entropy and go bad without warning. If you're gonna try and back these up it kinda defeats the purpose of having them in the first place. May as well go with option 1.

Mask roms really are king and it's a shame Plaion went with flash. NAND as it is, lives in this middle ground of shittest option.
>>
>>12597075
You’re downloading the wrong roms. You need decrypted roms. Get the darksoft set.
>>
>>12599396
Mask roms should be the golden standard. ALL types of flash storage are susceptible to bit flipping from cosmic rays
>>
it's an official revision of neo geo hardware with official print runs of games. you might not like it, but it *is* a neo geo. no one says a model 2 genny isn't a real console. no one thinks the numerous pcb revisions to various game carts aren't real copies. sorry snkucks you're little club isn't so exclusive any more
>>
>>12599358
>>12599096
Kinda true. I'm never going to be able to afford DDR5, or perhaps more truly to justify it. And what comes next, the death of the PC like the youtubers are starting to say? Distributed cloud AI gaming for the masses so we can own nothing and be told we are happy? No thanks.
>>
>>12599491
Bro you don't need DDR5 for emulation.

Anyway, don't get too caught up in things which haven't happened yet.
>>
>>12599560
You do for PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U and Switch emulation.
>>
>>12599560
Nothing to do with emulation, it's to do with the direction gaming is taking, and where we're likely to end up. I meant, rather than a high-end PC, i agree with the other anon who said emulation and lower-power systems might be what ppl turn to, if the other constraints i mentioned manifest.
>>
>>12599565
These not retro, and no, you still don't need DDR5. An AM4 8-core with DDR4 is plenty for these.
>>
>>12599560
desu the rising prices have me genuinely spooked. things are getting bad when a fucking steam deck is almost $1000. i’m going to start stocking up on everything that’s reasonably priced right now. retro games, mini consoles, rereleased consoles like the aes plus and the atari 2600 plus. going to start making yearly backups of hard drives and sd cards. it sounds paranoid but i think we’re heading for some pretty bad times and i don’t have any other hobbies. i was probably going to skip the aes plus but i’m sold on it now unless it ends up being a complete piece of shit.
>>
>>12599581
You only get sub 10FPS with An AM4 8-core with DDR4.
>>
>>12599587
That's absolute bullshit.

RPCS3 is the most demanding emulator of the platforms listed and they have cpu chart you can look up.

Even a 5600x will run at full fps for 90% of compatible games.
>>
>>12599358
This is 4chan no reasonable takes allowed. Now leave immediately because you’re classing up the joint and seem like the type of person who you could have an honest discussion with, which is what this board is supposed to be about but is, in essence, just a console warring shit flinging Mario Zelda or Sonic board, where everything else gets shit on and any thread insta derailed if you don’t post on one of those three topics.
>>
I have a game and anniversary console reserved but at the rate in which gaming prices are exploding (the only gen in existence where the hardware is not only going up in price it’s skyrocketing in price in order to price out owning anything so you have to ultimately just subscribe to cloud gaming in order to play any type of game is what they want) I’m considering doing the same. I almost exclusively buy physical and almost exclusively buy retro physical. Limited run may suck morally I guess but no one else is putting out real physical copies w the games on the disc no net required so what are you going to do? My first purchase from them is that marvel spiderman collection coming later this month, the one w the og x-men 6 player arcade game. Say what you want about them and things like the m64 and analogue but once you buy it, you own it and you don’t need internet.
>>
>>12599586

>>12599712
This was a response to your post on stocking up on physical retro releases. Forgot to tag it but I think you have the right idea.
>>
>>12599712
Also if the second wave of games for the aes+ includes either or both Last Blades for me personally it’ll be worth it.
>>
>>12599571
ARM is the future and it is already strong enough to emulate everything. Only thing left to do is to finish porting the current emulators to ARM architecture

I wouldn't even say its a money thing strictly, the biggest problem is that you are not getting anything new out of paying premium like you would do years ago.
Might as well just pay less for old hardware that already has a proven library of games (+ homebrew and rom hacks) than paying 2000 dollarydoos and having to pray for devs to release atleast one playable game every year that doesnt look like it would run on a Genesis.
>>
>>12599716
I’m also hoping we get The Last Blade games. Also, Samsho 2. I’ve always wanted an AES copy of that.
>>12599790
That too. Modern gaming is so unsatisfying to me outside of a few games here and there. Pay $70 for some unfinished, mediocre game that requires a 50GB patch on day one and that will sell me cut content as DLC further down the line. Goody. I’ll pay SNK or any other game publisher a premium price just to not have to connect my console to the fucking internet ever again.
