While I'm sure that may have been the case for some of you, I personally grew up in circles where people never had that 'omg it's so kiddy' thing and liked pokemon and zelda (yes, including wind waker) pretty much from elementary school and high school. We just also grew to like more things like RE and Silent Hill as well. Must have been truly awful for you people to have to pretend to hate something for such stupid reasons.

So he would have learned about it during the time that Link was sailing with the pirates (since they're literally all Hyrule knights in hiding). But that's just an educated guess. I don't think the game ever actually says how he knows. As for why Link is willing to play along, I mean he's a magic ship that gave him the ability to control the wind. Probably knows stuff. Also Link met Ganondorf, we the player didn't get a good look at him but Link was right there.

Meanwhile if you get past it, the rest of the game is actually decent to good. I'd say the game is hated for the right reason but if you dig deeper, it shouldn't be. Also the friendly AI is dogshit.That level shouldn't have made it to production or been drastically curtailed to only include the prison section and to make it as short as possible while still covering the same plot beats.
