What's your favorite retro Dragon Quest game?
>>
>>12598368
Playing the NES version of 4, not my favorite but back when I played it on DS I liked the villain a lot and I want to see how they handle it on the original.
>>

3, 5, and 8, each for different reasons
>>
>>12598368
Idk, I like the first one alot.
>>
>>12598368
7 > 6 > 8 > 5 > 4 > 3 > 2 > 1

DQ got better with every new entry, the sole exception was 8 but i can't blame them it was the first 3D game

we get it, you are poser from reddit

Based.

I don’t like Dragon Quest. I like basketball.

Turn based basketball RPG, when?
>>
>>12598578
They’re really gay over there but in a closeted way.
>>

4. The game with a merchant so powerful he spawned a genre that became Chunsoft's butter.

>soulful animated intro showing the three main characters walking toward the screen to meet the player. Mega Kino.
>Subtle worldbuilding showing characters that question the world's nature and morals, showing how Hargon's evil influence starts to crawl in. Also memorable because you have to wait until the NPC walks near the jail door. Foreshadowing that you can later open those doors.
>Classic early game enemy formation with the first set of mages, scary but relatively weak. Cobras are dangerous that early into the game.
>The fated south Monolith, which reminds of the southmost shrine in DQ1. Even if that's just the southmost before you get the ship.
>Doggy starts following you around and... surprise!
>One of those treasure chests that end up having 26 G or something.
>Classic annoying set of enemies. Baboons are savage, although it's worst when it's a group, and these red centipedes are tough as nails, only Midenhall prince's physical attacks are effective. Poor Cannock prince can barely scratch their shell
>DQ2 did a lot of cool things with twisting up castle maps. This one is a neat puzzle. Talking to fire flames (spirits) is scary at first, as it seems they might be enemies.
>classic midgame ocean set of enemies. Magidrackies must be eliminated first. Birdmen can be tough at first.
>That poor guy who was left outside without knowing the whole town was living underground. This city has the girl that sings to you, great 8bit chiptune earworm.
>Dragon Ball 1st episode enemy, and a pair of enemies that would probably offend people in the west nowadays.
>The last town, the last base of operations before reaching Rhune.
>These imp bosses are so cool, they remind me of something that could be in Go Go Ackman
>A simplified version of the final castle from DQ1. It adequately looks less threatening, as the Dragonlord's grandson seems to be a chill, peaceful guy.
>late enemy set of enemies. These blonde orcs are tough.

>TFW you finally have the Moon Stone (different from Moon Crest)
>eyeball about to bring doom in late game
>the lava cave. That one lava corridor that goes upwards fooled me at first.
>Those big guys can be terrifying, mini-bosses basically, comparable to dragons in DQ1, but even tougher.
>The mysterious Rubiss room. The mystery remains even after you speak to him.
>A postal from the final destionation. Who are the oldman and the lady in that final monolith, in such dangerous location?

>This city has the girl that sings to you, great 8bit chiptune earworm.

The only track not composed by Sugiyama, it was a promotion with an idol. The 8-bit version is genuinely better than the "real" version

>These blonde orcs are tough.

Gold Orcs, they yield the highest amount of gold per enemy, close to the limit of 255G. They can be found around Beran as well for money grinding; that's if you don't know about the faster way to make money by selling Iron Helm item drops and of course the exploit with the Thunder Staff in the Famicom version butiirc that was fixed on NES

>Who are the oldman and the lady in that final monolith, in such dangerous location?

I always assumed the monolith was already there when Malroth settled in and these are the only 2 survivors but I have no idea.

>when Malroth settled in

I mean Hargon. Also I always assumed Hargon was a former clergy man gone to the other side but maybe that's just my headcannon. I had anohter headcannon that the king in hiding in Tantagel was another cousin of the protags but that turned out to just be headcannon
>>
>>12598640
Hargon kind of looks like a boss imp.
Malroth is another mystery, where was Hargon hiding it? Did he open a portal right before dying? Was Malroth within Hargon?
>>
>>12598421
DQ2 is the only case where the oft repeated complaint of the scrunched viewport of the GBC games actually fucked me, because the screen isn't big enough to show the warp tiles in the teleport hub if you just walk in and talk to the priest. I eventually figured it out but it can derail the game a fair bit if you don't walk around and explore that room fully!
>>
>>12598645
It looked like a powerful summoning to me with the earthquakes. I always assumed the fire are caused by Malroth himself to trap the party while he was spawning

he is the most soulful poster itt tho

anyway I've only ever played DQIII on the GBC. It is my favorite. Will leave /vr/ behind and play the 1+2 remakes on Nintendo Switch
>>
>>12598605
What games are Torneko-likes?
>>
3 snes is the peak, followed by 6 snes and 8 ps2 (need to clarify because fuck the demakes of those games) All the other retro ones besides 7 are good games too, but 5 is heavily overrated, 3/4/6/8 are all better.
>>
>>12598748
you should really play 3 on SNES, the same game as GBC but with god like visuals and sound.
>>
>>12598861
Based VI fan. The most underlooked one.
>>
>>12598868
I will never ever understand why people hate on this game. I kept playing it and wondering "when does it get bad?" and it never did, maybe aside from the mudo fight requiring more grinding than I wouldve liked, kinda like dhoulmagus in 8.
>>
>>12598873
Probably filtered by Murdaw
>>
3>7>5>8>4>2>6>1

They all good, even DQ1 famicom

Dragon quest is problably the most consistent franchise in terms of quality ,i don't think you can love one dragon quest and hate another one (not counting the MMO one)
>>
>>12598868
>>12598873
6 is my favorite after 3
Big world to explore and you need to pay attention and not forget things, or take notes
>>
>>12598883
I enjoyed the first 6 but I'm kinda getting bored a lot in 7. So much running from one dialog/story scene to the next.
>>
>>12598748
I am know realizing what they meant by "Surround"

Did you know that in the original FC/NES/MSX versions you can't acquire an item drop if you already have said item in your inventory, apart from consumables like Herbs, you'll get a bit of gold instead? And did you know that for the western NES version they added a failsafe, a double check that the item is indeed in the inventory?

I don't know why they'd feel the need to add a failsafe when the whole thing seemed to work just the same in the FC version and I've never seen any mention of a bug regarding item drops on Japanese sites... What this means however is that there is indeed a small chance that there was a bug under some obscure circumstances and that maybe, just MAYBE, Tajiri's friend wasn't lying or exploiting the password system when he said he had two Mysterious Hat (the famous story about what inspired the connectivity for Pokémon).

Well you probably already knew all that, because I already told (You).
>>
I've only played dq 1, 3, and 5 so far, but out of those I fucking loved 5. It really felt like a big Arthurian adventure. I liked how the npcs would often have new dialogue after major story events. Little things like that go a long way towards making me invested in an rpg. Also the main guy looks like gohan.

1 was nothing but grinding
2 just sucked
3 was great and looking to start 4 soon

>1 was nothing but grinding
Good music though
>>
>>12600035
I have no idea how someone could say 2 sucked. It has so many clever ideas that are a real expansion on 1. If this is the case, I can't wait to get to 3.

If he thinks DQ1 is "nothing but grinding" that means he played it using a guide so he was forced to grind to go to the next place. When you explore without a guide, it becomes your adventure, that's essential to playing the DQ games.
>>
>>12600463
No, you definitely need to grind even when playing blind. Maybe you've only played the SFC version where you level up way faster or something.
>>
>>12600479
Nope, I played the original FC release without using any cheats.
The only grinding I remember is maybe 40 minutes of grinding Gold Man enemies to purchase equipment, and maybe anither 40 minutes at the end game before the final castle
>>
>>12600463
>>12600501
What? DQ is literally just grind in an area until you can safely reach the next area over and over with towns and dungeons thrown in. Maybe play this game for the first time in 20 years or so.
>>
>>12600641
I played it recently, the FC original.
I never had to "stay in one place and grind" except for the 2 moments I mentioned, which didn't even take too long.
>>
>>12600771
I swear, you faggots will outright lie on here.

3 is like 2 but with 4x the scope and a dope make your own party class system. also less cryptic with a better level curve.
>>

>I want to be a young girl
me too
>>
My favourite DQ is 4 because of the structure. 5 is cool too and I like what I've played of 6 so far (I liked the twist).
>>
>>12601349
2 was already too big though.
>>
>>12600771
You should make a strategy guide. I tried playing the FC one with no grinding (walking in the same place to get gold for the next equipment) a couple months back, just trying to progress through escalation, and found it very rough and hit a wall eventually before moving to the southern-most continent.
>>
>>12598368
I've only played I to IV and VI so far, and I would put III as my favorite because the story is simple enough and the class system doesn't overcomplicate things. It took me a bit to enjoy the world map being shaped as Earth, though.
I could choose any of the games in the first trilogy as my favorite, to be honest. Loved how they connected.
>>
>>12598368
I really want it to be DQ11, but the faggot Sylvando really does take away from it. So I'll go with DQ8.
>>
>>12601298
>other people engage differently than me with video games? No! They lie!
>>
>>12601814
I just think he hasn't gotten through the whole game yet. We always have someone determined that grinding is a lie, which it mostly is, and you can get through the first 2/3rds of DQ1 in a struggle just by exploring and experimenting and dying, and then they come in these threads to say you can play the whole game like that. They hit The Wall and just drop off into the aether slowly after. I know this, because I was that anon before. After DQ1, this does become a legitimate way to play every game though, walking back and forth to get money for gear extensively kind of goes extinct.
