besides some doom collection i never did, and i bought that from kmart many years after its initial release. i played a lot of shareware over the years (dont even remember how i came upon most of it) but i never felt compelled to get the full versions.
>>12599185I don't recall ever buying the full versions of any shareware I played, but I was also poor.
What's the equivalent of the shareware model today?
>>12599194free demos, essentially the same thing just dont have to worry about physical distribution
>>12599196Demos nowadays offer little playtime though, shareware gave you like a third of the full game to cruise through.
>>12599185Yes, especially if demos count.Escape Velocity on the Mac is definitely worth the full version.
The closest I got to this as a kid was registering a "cardware" game called Hero for MS-DOS. It was a Roguelike, but with character classes, Borland VGA graphics, and an assload of kobolds. It's challenging, but I was enamored by itThe game could be considered registered if you sent the game's developer a postcard in the mail. I wrote him a letter telling him that his game was cool and expressed interest in making games myself someday. The author sent me a several-page hand-written response, telling me that he was in college and that I should get an email address so he could send me a compiler. I did what he suggested and he sent me a pirated copy of Borland Turbo C++ 3.0. It was a big step in getting me into software development. Thanks Brad, wherever you are
>>12599250Pretty nice story, anon
>>12599206Larp. Nobody paid for Macintosh shareware especially not Ambrosiaslop, we used Surfers Serials and Hotline servers.
