I was excited to see a return to flying a space ship and shooting things but I honestly didn't enjoy it nearly as much as the original or 64.

Once you've played the game through once, you've seen it all. It is extremely short and linear. At least 64, short as it was, had multiple ways to complete a mission and you'd be rewarded for completing certain objectives. Combat also feels... slower than 64. I don't know if slower is the right word for it, but a more accurate one eludes me right now. Some of the missions even feel shorter than most 64 ones too.
I liked Assault too, but it's a clear downgrade from what came before. I feel like if it had more missions and fine-tuned the on foot combat so it doesn't feel like ass, it'd be more fondly remembered. Especially because this is one of the very few times the series didn't just rehash the StarFox 1 plot.

pretty much. if they pushed it back a year to release on the Wii with a bit more polish and online multiplayer, I think it would have done a lot better. the multiplayer was a lot of fun, but nobody played it because split-screen was already dying by 2005.

I don't think pushing assault back a year until the wii was an option. Namco was in the process of being merged with Bandai and that was already causing internal issues at Namco by the time Assault came out.
