In just three short years, RE Code Veronica dropped a whopping 32 (THIRTY TWO!) points to fall from an extremely impressive 94 on Metacritic (timeless generational classic tier) to a disappointing and mediocre 62 (forgettable shovelware tier).

What could possibly have happened to cause such an extreme change in public reception?

CV's graphics were seen as amazing in 2000 because the Dreamcast was new and the PS2 hadn't come out yet. In 2003 not so much and the port made it look worse than it was originally.

The other reason is that survival horror was still hot in 2000 but that changed almost overnight once PS2/GC/XBOX consoles came out. It turned from one of the best selling genre to a niche in just a couple years.

tl;dr when the game came out people were blinded by shiny graphics and a trending genre.

Why do critics care so much about graphics? Graphics should only be part of a game, not singlehandedly carrying it into masterpiece status.

I never got the hype around graphics then or now. I can genuinely hop from a modern cutting-edge game to a PS2 game to a NES game to an N64 game and I don't care at all. I care so, SO much more about artstyle and design rather than the graphical tech. But I know so many people who act like they are unable to play even 7th gen games because they are too ugly or something

It was the early days of 3D gaming. The jump in graphics from fifth to sixth gen was way more impressive than graphics now. Seeing SoulCalibur on Dreamcast for the first time was amazing.

I don't believe it. I played both 3D games and 2D games (mainly on handheld) as a kid and thought nothing of it. I only remember only one game ever having graphics that impressed me, and it didn't make me just think it was the greatest game ever or something, it was just a nice bonus.

Clearly these critics don't care about the medium itsself, the actual gameplay, the challenge, the experience, the story, the immersion. They sound more like techies that just happen to play some games.

I haven't read the reviews, but did it get negative remarks on the core gameplay, or more critiquing the added features/changes, and whether or not they made it a worthy re-release, especially for people who had the original? Just like people will gladly shit on remastered Bluray releases of classic films, not because they dislike the film, but because the remastering was poorly done or they didn't include enough bonus features to justify the release. People shat on the Wii release of SMAS, because it was a lazy cashgrab, not because SMAS is inherently bad.

It got rated lower because it came out like 3 or 4 years after the Dreamcast version and the only changes was censorship. Iirc it had less gore. It's just a shitty cash grab port. This thread is garbage.

You should go to the CV wiki article and read some of the archived reviews from back in 2000 it links to. They're full of fanboys hyping this game to high heaven. I don't even think it's really a bad game but they talk it up like it was a once in a lifetime masterpiece that completely changed the landscape of games.
