The Castlevanias after SotN are not fun.

The ones before aren't fun either. The gay jump alone ruins any hope of fun in CV1-4

I had fun playing Aria of Sorrow

Circle of the Moon is good, at least it is somewhat challenging (unlike SotN)

The first Castlevania I truly enjoyed was Circle of the Moon. I got a GBA at launch and while I would usually buy a Mario game, the GBA Mario looked like a crappy port of part of an SNES game so I went for COTM instead. I really liked the sense of exploration and the RPG mechanics which made the game feel less punishing because I could just grind if anything felt too difficult.
