What does /vr/ think of clone consoles? Famiclones are a no brainer but how about those shitty atgames mega drive clones?
>>
>>12601805
There are decent MD-on-a-chip clones with SMS compatibility, the AtGames ones are dogshit however.

Funny enough they actually got it right with the flashback consoles but by then people had completely lost trust in them to not sell you literal shit.
>>
>>12601870
Agreed, but ultimately an emulator box and a hardware clone are separate products imho
>>
They're so fascinating. It's hard to believe that back in the 80s and 90s, if you were a large company like Atari, Nintendo, Sega, or Sinclair there was a very real possibility that a group of electrical engineers in some basement could pick your hardware apart, draw schematics of their own, fab a functional clone of your game system or computer, and even sell it on store shelves alongside the authentic devices! It happened with the Coleco Gemini that was sold alongside the 2600, the Soviet Didaktik ZX Spectrum clone, and the infamous Dendy Nintendo clones.

They've only gotten better over the past 40 years, as Chinese clone chips have reached the point of near perfect compatibility with their respective libraries. Some NES clones are even capable of booting Castlevania 3 now kek. Genesis clones have also progressed enough to boot Virtua Racing with some user modifications, but they still aren't compatible with the Sega CD or 32x. As they improve, they give younger people with a budding interest in retro games an affordable entry point to retro gaming, weakening the hold that greedy collectors and resellers once had on this hobby.

The AtGames Genesis came out when I was around 12, and I wanted one for Christmas that year because it was super affordable, and the novelty of a new, official Genesis (with a cartridge slot!) was simply too great to ignore. Unfortunately, I never got my hands on one because it wasn't stocked in my area until long after I lost interest in it. My parents were highly skeptical of online shopping at the time, so simply buying it from Amazon was not an option.

>>12601870
This was unfortunately just a cheap ARM SoC running Android with a custom frontend they dumped your cartridges before running them in an emulator. The console in the OP was a genuine clone that played games natively, running games directly from the cartridge if you inserted one.
>>
>>12601945
Is there a list of modern decent Genesis clones? If it cheaper than used in EBay I might pull the trigger.
>>

Mega Retron HD from Hyperkin, GamerzTek Minigen, Retroad 16-bit from AliExpress.

I don't know who this e-celeb is dude, the flashback line of consoles isn't that bad though.
>>12601945
I owned the pic rel atgames console and your parents saved you from a lot of heartache and potentially ruining your interest in the hobby, these clone consoles are fantastic don't get me wrong but this one is a piece of shit that can't even emulate right. It has horrible audio, the lock-on cartridge with S3&K actually doesn't work and a lot of the games built into it are shovelware or very choppy roms.
>>
>>12602338
i wanna fuck sonic so bad, yes i would be a bottom
>>
>>12601805
basically emulation. not the real thing. same thing with flashcards and non pvm crts. dont even bother responding I dont care about your opinion, this is not a discussion. I will literally close this thread now and never open it again.
>>
>>12602338
I did watch several reviews on YouTube back then and many of them lamented its horrible audio, but it didn't really phase me because those differences are only noticeable to people who grew up playing on an authentic Genesis. Even then, young me preferred to mute the TV and listen to the radio instead, like I did with the Genesis clone I bought right after Christmas from a local Disc Replay, which was compatible with the Sonic and Knuckles lock-on gimmick and even the unlicensed EA carts like Road Rash.
>>
They used to have their place but now its easier to get an okd console and fpga systems

I had pic related years back. Thing was a piece of shit
>>

Mine had a menu like this
>>
I tried to play a fake copy of aladdin I always had on one of those things and then it overheated this caused a mystical genie dressed as Mario to emerge from the console and then he raped me
>>
I’m honestly tempted to get a NES clone off AliExpress, just to see if they’ve made new good ones or if they’re same old SoC.
>>
>>12603940
I believe you.
>>12603941
NES clones are perfected, Genesis clones still have a long way to go.

The "Lava FC" clones use real chips, have RGB support and are pretty well built for the price. Would recommend.

>AtGames
It's actually kinda wild that back in the early 2000s, they were able to convince Sega to give them essentially a master license for plug and play devices, where they then proceeded to use it to strong arm other companies (including TechToy, Sega's longtime businesses partner in Brazil) into paying them licensing fees. Them bug men be sneaky like that.

What exactly do you mean with "got it right"?

>Hyperkin
I've never owned any clone console, but based on what I've seen it seems these guys dominate the scene. It might be a little unrelated to the topic at hand, but I just want to point out this company is shady in how they have ripped off Open Source emulators and used them in their Retron 5 console. Now one of the things with Open Source is you have to release the code if you modify it and eventually they did do that after pressure, but despite that they are still in violation of the terms of some of these emulators they stole because the terms of those emulators prohibit commercial use. The Retron 5 is a commercial product so that's a clear violation. Hyperkin doesn't care though. And their explanation in their FAQ is bullshit as you can see in picrel.

If you must buy from Hyperkin, fine, but I would strongly recommend against buying the Retron 5 in particular because it is completely software emulation even though it requires cartridges. It reads and rips the rom off the cart, then emulates it in these emulators it stole. If you're going to go that sort of route you may as well just emulate off your pc or a raspberry pi and forego the need for cartridges. You'll probably be using the exact same emulators anyway, but at least then its not stolen in a commercial product which you have to pay money for the "privilege" of using.

That being said, other Hyperkin products might be okay, technically speaking. The other Retrons don't work the same way as the 5 does so they might be alright and don't use stolen emulators (that I know of). But their handling of the Retron 5 shows them to be a shady company and I personally would not want to support them with any product they make because of that.
>>
>>12605381
If a product is good then I'll buy it. But I don't think Hyperkin makes good products.
>>
>>12601805
If you want a cheap NES console for HDMI, check out PicoNES on aliexpress. You can update the firmware too. The input lag is nonexistent. It's based on a github project. And the same dude is working on a Mega Drive version.
>>
>>12601805
For me, it's the treamcast...which is possibly the last clone console generation
>>
>>12605381
Their multi-system clones are definitely glorified cartridge dumpers with stolen emulators. The stand-alone clones they sell are rebrands of chink made SOC systems, Same thing with Retro-Bit's clones systems.
>>
>>12605376
The emulation was significantly improved, they had SD card slots, and a lot more built in games.
>>
>>12605431
Apparently this russian educational device is a mega drive clone and can play mega drive games.
