This was not exclusive and was simply an amazing port of the top arcade game, and it was the single reason people bought the hardware.Famicoms japan sales were slow early on, like atari it was measured in 6-digits. Then xevious arrived and japan went mental and nintendo finally had a million seller that moved hardware. Later SMB became its second killer app (and later the killer app for the NES due to being top arcade game of 1986). For genesis it was madden football that made the console a success in the west. Sales were poor until it arrived and cemented the console reputation as the sports machine. Madden was more important than sonic. For SNES it also had lackluster sales until SF2 limited exclusivity moved millions of consoles.Playstation had a lackluster launch, and it was the non-exclusive tomb raider that finally pushed hardware sales.
