Legend of Mana thread because they just put it on GoG.

Completionist nightmare

What am I looking at and what purpose does it serve

I can only lament that Square never tried to improve the LoM formula.
Lots of new experimental ideas, you can see potential in them, but the implementation wasn't great.
Yet the biggest fuck up was the combat system, a non-experimental mechanism. Maybe if it was actually fun to fight we would have a proper sequel.

It's what you need to do to complete a quest, but the game barely tells you the exact steps.

>fantastic 2D art and sprites
>fantastic music (Shimomura's best work, she herself recommends it as "that one OST that represents her the best")
>fantastic worldbuilding and story (at least when you compare it to any other Seiken Densetsu title; RIP cut content)
>crazy autistic mechanics that require hundreds of hours figuring out (you just know Kawazu had a lot of fun designing golemology, tempering, world map, Techs and other gameplay mechanics)
>
>absolutely stupid combat that relies on i-frame spam and stunlocking (on default difficulty it's trivial and you can beat the entire game with random weapon that has attack of 30~50, but No Future turns every enemy into HP sponge and without tempering every fight turns into 20+ minute slog)
I really wish it got Trials of Mana remake treatment - yes, losing the gorgeous 2D art would suck, but the combat is flawed to the core and can't be fixed without a complete overhaul.

Honestly the three quests that require you to have maximized mana levels in certain locations are the worst.
No way to know about them without a tutorial, no way to fix it after you're already built your map.

I've also played the game to completion (quest wise) many times thinking Ishe Platinum was the strongest material, completely ignorant of the existence of Lorimar Iron and Altena Alloy since they never spawned because of the way I was building my map.

if only this game gameplay had proper movement in the combat rather than the shitty slow ass grid movement slop

>grid movement slop
Stop posting.
It's not even grid based.

I followed a guide and still missed a bunch of stuff, most notably some exp sharing ring and a few cactus entries. Fuck the cactus especially. The special monsters also aren't worth it, I kept the chocobo from the SF2 save. Of course I missed out on stat growth because the dumb orchard minigame wasn't unlocked, which is also stupid shit, fruit sprites aside.

i don't know what ot call it so i said ''grid'' because that's what it feels like
and don't be a faggot you know well what i mean

The fighting stance dashing does look a bit like grid-based movement, which would actually be an improvement because it'd get rid of the atrocious normal in-battle "walking"
>>
>monsters and golems are capped at 200 strength
>instruments can't be tempered, so they're around ~108 strength maximum
>weapons are capped at 999 strength
I still hate how one mechanism is just allowed to be way more viable than all the others.

Fucking awesome thanks for the heads up. Already grabbed the Saga Frontier remaster so I was hoping they'd start adding more of their library to GOG.

No one did this quest without a walkthrough.
>>

I did.
Took me like 3 or 4 tries though.
Also you can just ignore the Dudbear and pay for the lamps yourself.
