The Mega CD is by far one of my favourite pieces of Sega hardware but I don't actually own many games for it, I got the addon for Sonic CD but I wanted to expand my horizons more, the only other games I have are Sol Feace, thunderhawk, and a lot of shoot 'em ups and FMVs. I know that Japan got a lot of better games, is there any that /vr/ recommends that won't rape my wallet? If it's expensive I can of course just burn them onto a disc but I want to be strictly on original hardware here, no romhacks that require emulation or anything that the real deal can't handle.

OP here forgot to mention I am a europoor but I have a 50/60hz mod and my Mega CD is region free so international game recommendations are fine.

Eh, did it really?

'Course, a lot of games that actually used the hardware and weren't FMV games got released there that were RPGs and action adventure, there wasn't' many of those in the west.

Besides Sewer Shark, were there any gems on the Sega CD?
>>
>>12604950
Soulstar if you want technically impressive game
Lords of Thunder (I personally prefer the PC Engine version, but it's still a great game on Sega CD)
Popful Mail (Un-Working Designs hack)

It's a gem in terms of Mega CD games, but i'm sure better shmups exist. I'd like to own this one but it's so fucking expensive, collectors deserve death for inflating the prices.
>>12605028
>Popful Mail
One I would've played the moment I got my Mega CD if it got a PAL release, I wonder why it was never released here.

>collectors deserve death for inflating the prices

Wouldn't it be the case that limited supply would be the inflation factor? Its not like they're making more of these.

Eh, damn near anything of some note got released in America eventually, either as a CD or standard Genesis cartridge. Even genuine weeb shit like Popful Mail and the Lunar games made it here. I guess Shadowrun (already a Shadowrun game on Genesis anyway), and SMT (already not localized on SNES), would have been nice, but that’s about it for me. But it’s definitely not “a lot” in any case.

In the early 2000's this game was dirt cheap, youtubers and collectors have worsened it's price considering it's an hour long game max.
>>

Snatcher is the only good thing on Sega CD. PC Engine CD is the superior CD console, it has actual games.
>>
Dark Wizard
Dungeon Explorer
Earthworm Jim (Best version)
Eternal Champions
Eye of the Beholder
Flink
Heart of the Alien
Lords of Thunder
Lunar 1& 2
Popful Mail
Road Avenger (fmv but actually good)
Shining Force CD
Snatched
Soul Star
Spiderman
Terminator
Vay

There are a few others but that's a decent list. I've probably got about 50 or so games for sega/mega cd that are decent or good. Some of the "decent" ones might be a stretch though.

Batman and Jaguar XJ200 are really good. F1 beyond the limit is nice but the controls are a bit twitchy. The traveling salesman looks interesting but its totally Japanese.

yes.

Keio Flying Squadron is like one of the only good games on the entire platform.

You also want to play the japanese version, the US/EU one censors so many religious references that it ends up missing entire cutscenes. Plus it's one of the few games where the JP version played more difficult (US version allows you to fly into landscape, JP version has you die if you do it, which greatly limits how far you can move on some levels).

Man I used to be able to 1cc the jp version, I should dig up my sega cd and try again.

I was thinking of buying this cheap 25 euro demo disc because you can play the entire game via a cheat code
>>
>>12605425
Such as? I'm looking into getting a PC Engine soon and I was struggling with whether to bother with the CD games. It looks like a bunch of untranslated RPGs, porn, and space shooters.
>>
>>12606587
That's still the EU version which is inferior. Just burn the iso of the jap version for 0.99€.
>>
>>12606862
>EU = inferior
Maybe for burgers, it's fine for me.
>>
>>12606934
It's not a case of EU being worse in general, it's a case of this specific game having the weakest port in Europe.
The USA version had full cutscenes and graphical effects missing, religious references edited out and the translation botched (the ark they find in one of the levels is not just a creation of "the ancients" as the english dub puts it, it's in fact Noah's Ark, and the FMV describing The Ark and The Flood is completely removed), and many level parts having collision checks omitted to dumb down the game difficulty.
The EU version is the US version, but also playing at 50Hz, so considerably slowed down and not full screen.

Plus there's the dumb early 90s cartoon dub, which is pretty poor, but I suppose it's also charming in its own way so not a fault. But fucking up the gameplay and the translation is. The english ports of Keio are like some Working Design tier fuckups. Go and play the Japanese version instead.

>completely unremarkable game where you just answer quiz questions
Just because the boxart is wacky doesn't mean it's actually good you stupid fucking poser.
>>
>>12605405
I really wish they would have added towns to the GG chapters they ported. They didn't even do that for the extra chapter that was added. Worth playing if you're a Shing Force fan but otherwise a bit of a letdown.

Jurassic Park CD, Rise of the Dragon, Adventures of Willy Beamish, Terminator CD, Shining Force CD

There was quite a few good games for it
