Killer Instinct was the best fighting game of its generation. Street Fighter 2 was for try hards and Mortal Kombat was stupid edgy to the point of comedy. Killer Instinct was infinitely cooler with the most badass roster of fighters there has ever been in a fighting game to date.

It really wasn't. If anything it feels like an unintentional period piece. The setting, the pre-rendered graphics, the fact a game with Nintendo branding all over it has blood and fatalities. It couldn't have come out at any time except for 1994 or 1995.

It's indeed very cool but not enough to edge out MK for me
>>
Was anyone else surprised that Nintendo would actually okay this for one of their games at the time? I had completely forgotten about Orchid's finisher. Now that I think about it KI is actually a huge anomaly in itself. Pretty wild to think this was once a Nintendo franchise for awhile.

Killer Instinct is my favorite fighter of all time.
So much style, good music, and awesome characters.

when the opening music starts when you turn on the snes cart, it takes me back in time without fail.

Also BLACK CARTRIDGE, that shit was fire back then

>Mortal Kombat was stupid edgy to the point of comedy
Mortal Kombat wasn't trying to be taken seriously. It was inspired by Big Trouble in Little China which is an action/comedy movie. Then the sequel has things like Friendships and Babalities and sarcastic lines in the ending text for some characters.

MK and KI both had more interesting atmospheres but I never really enjoyed the combo stuff in fighting games so I ended up playing MK more.

I should play Killer Instinct.

KI1 and 2 are genuine good games as are the console ports.
Rare had something special there but sadly the market "demanded" 3D fighting games at the time, and even still fighters were starting to decline in popularity.
At least KI1 got to enjoy it's very hot moment.
At first I remember being wary, "another MK wannabe?" But hell no, other than the edge and the fatalities, this game was a different beast, with better and more fluid gameplay than MK which always felt stiff and laggy to me, KI was nimble and fluid.
It's no surprise as I later learned about Ken Lobb's love for fighting games especially SNK

Eh, not that hard to believe. There were a number of M-rated games on the N64.
The SNES had more censorship, with MK1 for example, but by the time 2 came out, they were ok with putting in the gore, because they knew the Genesis version would sell more otherwise.

This. So fucking badass

They should have really left out the fatalities in hindsight since they weren't necessary since the biggest appeal here was the combos. I get why the included it of course so its just in hindsight here. As for MK the games always felt cheap to me if that makes sense. Not that they are bad but they never felt properly balanced for single or multiplayer. I remember even as a kid sometimes I would just do the retarded left/right constant punching and it would get the job done. Then there is also the fact that these old MK games were known to have cheating input reading AI to a point of purposefully being cheap to you the player. Being a cheap bastard that spams the same moves in MK always somehow felt even more like being an asshole than say Hadouken spamming in SF would feel. Its probably got a lot to do with the physics engine themselves and maybe SF is just easier to read.

I think its pretty clear that the top 3 fighters from that time period were the MK games, SF and KI. Everything else was below that. SNK fighters were sort of their own beast more popular outside the US and few had the money for the SNK console. The only reason I can think KI might get unfairly overlooked in favor of SF and MK is because it released very late into the SNES life cycle. Arcade or not it still released late so people might not have played it as much before moving on to the next console gen and next generation of arcade fighters.

KI is not even the best cartridge based 16-bit console fighting game released in 1995

Nobody but rich people actually owned SNK consoles. KOF as a series is mostly a Japanese and Mexican thing since America cared more for SF and MK. As for the Saturn it is a generation after Killer Instinct's release on arcade and SNES. So a proper comparison for Virtua Fighter 2 would be with Killer Instinct 2 or Gold. Not the first game.

>>12608314
No it's a 1993 game

KI is the only series where a character would be missing from the next entry and people wouldn't give a fuck

>>12609118
Because it only had a whopping one new entry until it was put on hiatus until the Xbox reboot you moron.

Lmao, not even close. These games were made the same year as KI and shit all over it:
- X-Men Children of the Atom
- Darkstalkers
- The King of Fighters 94
- Samurai Shodown 4
- Virtua Fighter 2

>The console was too expensive, nobody played it!
Are y'all aware that the game was also released on arcade?
