Not even close, the boat sections of Dead Mans Chest don't feel completely retarded or like they're intentionally wasting your time.

I had this game as a kid. I was about 6 years old in 2003 and had this game and some Madden game for GBA. I didn't particularly like Pirates but I especially didn't give a shit about or know anything about football so I stuck with Pirates. I could read at that age but for some reason I just refused to read anything if it was in a videogame so at the beginning of every level when it tells you what to do I would just ignore it and get stuck running around in these shitty tiny levels for hours on end. My dad was a home inspector for a living and that often meant riding in the car with him as he drove sometimes halfway across the state to do his job. All I could do on those long drives was play this game. I would also get carsick very easily when playing Gameboy in the car. Eventually after what felt like the 100th time of playing up to like the 3rd level in Pirates of the Caribbean in the backseat of my dads car on a 7 hour drive upstate, listening to this fucking song https://youtu.be/5_oQUB69ve4?si=TU981oVYMpWx2iVV my eyes gazed up from my Gameboy over to the road we were driving on at about 70MPH. I felt my nausea peak, I heard the music from the game, my frustration and boredom of only having this singular dogshit game was at a boiling point. I was going to just jump out of the car and walk home. I opened the car door as we were on the road and my dad screamed at me and pulled over. I didn't tell him why I opened the door, he took my Gameboy as punishment and we just moved on. Honestly it was a favor more than a punishment. If I didn't get some actual good games soon after that for my birthday I probably wouldn't have wanted to play video games ever again.

Sometimes I feel like /vr/ forgets the MASSIVE amount of shovelware on Nintendo handhelds prior to the 3ds.
My teenage cousins had Mary Kate Ashley and Lizzie McGuire games that I sometimes borrowed when bored of Mario Cart Super Circuit and YYH Tournament Tactics

GBA was almost exclusively shovelware. DS too but DS feels like it had more "real" games than GBA did.

>GBA was almost exclusively shovelware.
True. Even now, if you go to Game Stores that sells second-hand cartridges, you'll find that there's an abundance of shovelwares waiting to be sold. Some where good. And the ones I genuinely enjoyed as a kid was Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban ( which was an RPG in its handheld equivalent ), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ( a Metroidvania/Platformer mixed with Wind Waker's Sailing Sim ) and Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King ( Diablo-style game ). There were the Hotwheels Games as well like World Race which was basically F-Zero for those who never played it. Stunt Track Challenge was fun but they had that retarded password save system so unless you were keeping track of your record ( which I doubt any seven year old was doing ), you'd have to start from scratch when you turn it on again.

I find it weird how Curse of the Black Pearl was miles from Dead Man's Chest in terms of genre. It's just so weird thinking about it.

kids who ask their parents to buy a game based off a movie they like. I was that kid, glad I did too because it's a great underrated game on the gba.

I had Pinocchio and Toy Story on SNES and both were okay.

How is this like wind waker?

This

You can sail between different islands on an overworld with a fully controllable ship and it's a metroidvania.

Did you laugh with him about over a beer like 30 years later?

>How is this like wind waker?
The game follows the plot of the film in which Jack Sparrow tries to evade his debt to Davy Jones by hunting down the Chest that containts his heart and the key needed to unlock it. You sail around different islands in-game as the plot progresses and each island has its own Metroidvania-style dungeon you can run through to find different treasures ( after activating their respective quests in the form of the game's rumor system which you can find in every tavern in the island ).

The game also has a Naval Warfare mechanic where you can take on different classes of ships belonging to the Royal Navy or other Pirates. Encountering and touching them in the Sea Overworld will trigger a battle in which you can either outrun them or take them head-on. And after sufficiently damaging them, you can board those ships ( in which the game turns into a Metroidvania ) to steal their goods in the form of supplies, gold, special ship ammunition or sailing equipment.

Unlike Wind Waker however, the game a has a system where you have to take into account your ship's resources like Food and Liquor. And if they drop to 0, your crew will start a mutiny and you'll have to play through the first dungeon of the game again ( but your progress won't suffer ).

Jack Sparrow and the Black Pearl's abilities at the start of the game may be lacking. But as you play further and acquire more treasures, you can unlock combat abilities and equipment that would make both more durable and stronger. You can also hire other sailors to replace Joshamee Gibbs as your right hand man through unlocking their rumours too. And they also strengthen the Black Pearl through passive abilities.

That sounds cool...why was the game so shit then to the point of >>12607136 nearly dying over it?

Different game. Anon's talking about Curse of the Black Pearl.

Nintendo handhelds are shovelware machines meant to drain the pockets of dads and moms
>>
>>12607136
That's the first game not the one in the OP
>>
>>12607046
I find it odd that the game was released on all the handhelds from GBA to DS and PSP but not on the consoles or PC
>>
>>12607046
this one is a side scroller isn't it? i had it as a kid and it was decent

Same shit

>I find it odd that the game was released on all the handhelds from GBA to DS and PSP but not on the consoles or PC
At World's End came out for all consoles iirc. I'm just at awe at how different Dead Man's Chest is across all platforms.
>>
>>12607136
In my experience the only people who get carsick are women and pussy faggots.
>>
>>12607234
At least some of that shovelware was good. Even if that is an empty consolation.
>>
Am I the only one who misses the era of handheld demakes and licensed games? Most of them were crap but there was some charm to them

>>12607136
this song is good actually

Still seething after getting gaped last Thursday I see

>>12607046
I just tried this game out based on this thread and it's surprisingly decent, it's a bit frustrating at first but once you upgrade your character it becomes much more enjoyable
