>>12609892Nah. Good games don't need em.
>>12609892Valid by what standard?
>>12609892I used to avoid them, but they're growing on me. Now that I can do save states on original hardware for my NES it seems more appealing.
They're valid ways to cheat
If the actions you took couldn’t be translated back 1:1 to real hardware running the real game, then you didn’t beat it. Using save states to pick up from where you left off is fine. Using save states to ever go backward in time is a no-no.
>>12609892yes and no and vice-versa
man we sure are getting a lot of bait threads lately
>>12609892they're valid for practicing. but if you need them to beat the game you didn't beat the game
>>12609906True because good games let you save anywhere and any time.
Yep, especially when you press save instead of load and lock your game on a death screen
>>12610023The solution is make the save and load keys as far away as possible. My default is BACKSPACE for save and F3 for load. Never had to deal with that problem since.
I use them to get through games I don’t enjoy faster. For example: Gradius 3. I beat it on a real PS2. One of the most miserable games I’ve ever played in my life. That game is evil. Some years later I played on MAME and used save states to start from the beginning of each stage when I die. Still bullshit but much more enjoyable. I don’t spam the save button. If it’s a plausible theoretical clear then it’s good enough for me. I have a large backlog and have cleared and 1cc’d enough difficult games to know whether using save states would spoil my experience or not. Currently playing Xeno Crisis for Dreamcast and it’s a hard game but I find it good enough not to use save states.
they better be valid. it's the only way i play games
If your just saving between levels sure.
>>12609892Depends.Are you using them as an extended PAUSE button or are you Save Stating to rewind your mistakes?Like Miyamoto said that they put the Whistle in Super Mario Bros 3 because it was a big and long game and that would be a way to get you back to where you left off without putting a battery or password systemAn extended PAUSE is just fine, but for cheating....... nope
>>12609892I only use them for password games because fuck that retarded shit. I will never type in a password ever again.
>extend pauseIf you're using an extend pause but play another console game in between before resuming your state then it's still cheating unless we start pretending you had 1 TV per console and left all your consoles turned on at all times all the time. Even then you should delete your resume save once in a while to account for power failures and your mom finding out and turning off the console, or else you didn't beat the game.
>>12609892It's okay to drop a save state occasionally, just in case the emulator crashes or there's a power outage. Otherwise, you didn't beat the game.
>>12609892yes. if the tech existed for them back in the day they would have been in every game the entire time. no one makes you use it.
>>12610274Basically this. I also use it as a way to pick up where I left off immediately without wasting time, but that's it.
>>12610264>Not keeping your consoles on for decadesngmi
1)limit your quicksaving to when it feels fair.To spare yourself redoing challenges you have already beaten2) try rolling with bad consequences, it makes for a fun pacing change.I swear, some people can't regulate their own behavior and then blame it on the availability of choice.
you cant actually say you beat the game if you use them. however all i do is play the same games over and over i have for decades so i use the hell out of them for convenience, to experiment, reverse engineer how the game works, etc. i really cant imagine not using them at this point unless its a new-to-me game
I don't enjoy a game unless i beat it as it was intended BUT i never do it since i am a shitter
>>12609892For practice, absolutely. Some of these older video games had their difficulty cranked through the roof either to pad out the amount of time the player spent with it so they felt like they got their money's worth, or to suck all the quarters from a kid's pocket. Either way, save states make practicing these games infinitely easier. No more getting a run up to the point you suck at, dying, and not getting another chance at it until you get to that point in the game again and have inevitably lost your flow state. You can just save state at that point and learn the pattern or the strategy to make progress and then you can actually implement your newly learned skill in a non-save-state run. People who just save state through the whole game and rewind any minute mistake are completely missing the point and abusing the system though. Save states require actual discipline to work effectively and the unfortunate truth is that a lot of modern gamers lack that discipline entirely.
>>12610264I'm a grown man, I'm not gonna delete my save to roleplay getting caught by my mom you fucking retard. Do people actually fucking do this?!?
>>12609892>validkill yourself
>>12609892I don't play video games to impress other people.
>>12610264You know you can unplug the console from the TV without it turning off, right?
>>12609892Goyimstates are for llamas and HPBs.
Savestate users are coping subhumans.
