SA1 was designed for real 3d hardware. Most of the porting effort went into making the game function on the more primitive "3d" hardware that has no actual concept of depth. This required major reworking of the game was required. The whole DX thing was mostly just them trying to cover up the porting downgrades behind the excuse of creative choice.

So by that logic, if I built a console that did only monochrome wireframe 3d and ran at 120 fps it would be superior to the game cube. Because apparently functionality does not matter.

The point is, the game cube, and pretty much every other console besides the Dreamcast, has no concept of what depth is. These primitive "3d" hardware draws triangles in the exact order they are submitted completely ignoring depth. They have this 2d frame buffer hack the z-buffer which they use to poorly pretend they actually know what depth is. But as soon as anything is transparent, it totally breaks.

say what you want about the floors (thats honestly personal preference stuff), the water is WAY better. the original has such a small and obvious repeating texture pattern, but dx has a better look and the pattern is far less obvious, so it looks more natural. the text is better too. personally, i like the character lighting and rock walls better too, but thats a preference thing as well.

I prefer SA1 because more of the game I actually enjoy and the hubworlds were comfy. I only really like the Sonic and Shadow stages of SA2 but I dont like the full product as a whole at all. More power to people that prefer SA2 I've just never been able to get into it as much.
