Honestly, nothing. There used to be a ton but I moved to Japan in my late teen years and learned Japanese. Now I can play whatever I want. That not a humble brag, it's just my circumstances. But there was some games I was excited to play after making some progress in Japanese. One of the first games I played in Japanese was the DS remake of Rockman EXE 1 with bonus story elements to tie in with the Star Force games. That was a lot of fun but I think I heard it has a fan translation now. More recently I played a game called Gunman's Proof which is kind of like Zelda with guns. It was a lot of fun, I enjoyed my time with the game.

I picked up both of the Onigashima games for Super Famicom and I've been meaning to play them. I am quite confident that not only will these games never be localized, but also that they will never, ever, ever receive a fan translation. I'm looking forward to checking them out, I heard they're good. They're actually a remake of Famicom Disk System games.

They aren't, at least not really. Heisei Shin Onigashima is cartridge port of BS Shin Onigashima, a Satellaview game that acts as a sort of "sidequel" to the original game. Rather than following Donbe and Hikari, BS Shin Onigashima shows the backstories of the various animal helpers from before they join the party. The Satellaview version is a Soundlink game, so it featured voice acting and CD quality music that didn't make the cut for the cartridge version. Unlike some other Satellaview games, no one has made a restoration hack for BS Shin Onigashima, though there are recordings online of playthroughs from when the game was still being broadcasted, so the Soundlink audio isn't lost forever.

Heisei Shin Onigashima is not two games so much as it is one game released across two cartridges (presumably as a reference to the original Disk System game). After completing all the chapters on a cartridge, you unlock a port of the respective disk of the original game. I say port and not remake since the Super Famicom version is 1:1 to the original Disk System version. They didn't remaster the graphics in any capacity. The only difference is the audio which had to be redone to account for the different sound hardware, and the palette which is completely fucked for some reason. I know the Famicom doesn't have a proper RGB color palette and inconsistencies in NTSC mean every television is going to have slightly different colors, but they did a seriously abysmal job choosing the palette. Also the music is a huge downgrade. The original game makes really good use of the FDS' extra audio channel and is in my opinion the best soundtrack Koji Kondo wrote for the Famicom. The Super Famicom version sounds like a shitty MIDI imitation.

The decision to lock the port behind finishing the respective half of BS Shin Onigashima is bewildering. You'd think you'd want to play the original game BEFORE the pesudo sequel, but they don't let you. If you want, I can send you my save files with the port already unlocked. If you want to use your original cartridges, maybe I can make a game genie code that unlocks them. Ultimately the music and palette are enough of a downgrade that you should ignore the port and just play the FDS version, but I get wanting to play on the cartridges you already own.

Regarding translations, I don't share your pessimism. FDS Shin Onigashima already has a translation, though it takes the form of an emulator plugin rather than a patch. The person who made it is in the process of doing something similar for every untranslated Nintendo published game, so they'll around to Heisei Shin Onigashima eventually. Even independent of that, these are high profile Nintendo games. I'm sure someone will get to making a patch for them eventually. The vertical text is not the obstacle people think it is, especially considering the screen layout is mostly empty space that can be rearranged at will.

I think that ship already sailed. I get the impression that Konami's American doesn't like Tokimeki Memorial very much. It was one of only two games removed from the PC Engine Mini when they brought it stateside as the TurboGrafx Mini (the other was Tengai Makyou II). This is despite a dozen other games on the system being completely unplayable without being able to read Japanese.

The way it's designed makes sense for 99% of the library. There's only 5(?) licensed FDS games that span more than one disk (two disk sides) so it usually doesn't come up as a problem. The Mesen NES core associates external game data (save states, save files, screenshots, debugger labels, etc.) to the respective ROM / disk image via file name. Having a disk image span multiple files is incompatible with this paradigm and would require rewriting a lot of the core. It's not worth the effort to make a single digit number of games slightly more convenient to run.

For my money, any game that still isn't translated in 2024 must not be very good. This is what I believe, even though I know how hard hacking these games is sometimes. Apparently Racing Lagoon is really good, I don't know. Maybe there's still really good hidden stuff out there, but I doubt it. That's why I wish people made threads about these games and were honest and not just mega-weebs

I played this one for a bit. The gameplay is very basic. It's kind of like the first Dragon Quest, but with branching story paths. You lose all your progress after finishing a campaign, so don't get too attached to anything. I ended up calling it quits after my first playthrough. Maybe the online multiplayer is good, but I can't be bothered to find out.

My last one that I beat was Puyo Puyo Quest (the single player mode in Puyo Puyo Box for the PSX). I just finished it yesterday and I thought it was excellent.

It's an RPG, but instead of having normal RPG combat, all of the battles are Puyo Puyo. It's really a chocolate-and-peanut-butter experience. The early battles which in a normal RPG would be easy and boring are much more fun because Arle is underleveled and you have to rely on your Puyo Puyo skills, and the later stages that might be really punishingly hard in a Puyo Puyo game can be made much more manageable if you apply your RPG know-how.
It's about 10 hours long and I had fun pretty much the whole way through. The story is very whimsical and fun and Arle is adorable and perfect and I love her. The towns are extremely, extremely comfy, which is something I always look for in an RPG.
I really enjoyed the whole game; I think its already one of my top PSX titles.
