This sucks so much. It feels awful to play, MM is so slow and the animation makes him look like he's running in place, jumping is super floaty too. The game is pathetically easy with checkpoints and health refills every five steps, and they had so little faith in the core gameplay that it's constantly interrupted by stupid gimmicks, like the lame SHMUP sections, jump jump slide, the awful labyrinth in Astro Man's stage, etc. It sounds nice and I like the vile but I'd rather watch it than play it.

You are correct. For many people this was their first MM since it was on a new console, and it made a very sour impression on people.

The longtime producer for the series, Tokuro Fujiwara, left Capcom and Keiji Inafune was promoted to head Mega Man producer. His first order of business was to hire his artist friend Hayato Kaji to direct Mega Man 8. You can tell he's an artist and is clueless on gameplay since so much of the focus is on the visuals and animation, but the gameplay is very poor. And it's telling that Kaiji never once again directed a game again and stuck to art.

Longtime Mega Man fans will know Kaji as the designer of X.

Pretty sure that was intended with MM6's ending that seems to finally put Wily in jail for good and tease that the story would continue with a new direction, but Capcom later went back on the decision and made MM7.

Hating on this game was pretty popular for a while, but I actually really enjoyed the gameplay. It's pretty tough at times, which is why I think it gets a lot of hate. The gimmick sections can be a bit annoying, but they're not that hard when you figure them out. The shmup parts are actually kind of a nice departure. The music and vibe of the game are awesome. I actually fkn love this game.

MM7 can suxdix though

MM7 got bad reviews for being too "safe", especially after X, so Capcom though they needed to force innovations, hence all the half baked gimmicks. Terrible idea, journalists were cunts who never liked Mega Man in the first place and shouldn't have been listened too. Well at least we got &Bass out of this game.

That makes so much sense. X is VASTLY better than Megaman. Megaman is classic arcade quarter eater design, and X feels much more like a forgiving home console title.
