Is it fun/worth it to play light gun games with a controller? I'm particularly interested in Elemental Gearbolt and I have no space for a CRT

Emulate the light gun with a mouse using duckstation

no

Unless you already have the game, I would recommend playing on duckstation with mouse controls. While not perfect, it is better than no gun at all. Kinda wish I still had my copy but I can play the "Unworked Designs" to regain the original difficulty curve (the final stages are plenty hard).>>12619273

I tried House of the Dead 2 with controller and it just ain't the same.

Nowadays we've got more options for non-CRT light guns than ever

>I want a light gun that has actual slideback recoil
RS3 Reaper/Gun4IR
>I want a light gun but don't want to have sensors everywhere
Sinden Lightgun
>I want a light gun that I can use on a real PS1/2
Intec Time Breaker
>I want a light gun that doesn't break the bank
Wii remote + gun shell

I recently purchased a retroshooter rs3 reaper kit and it works very nice. I like how the sensors are little enclosed boxes and come with their own mounts. And with the included fish eye lens muzzle it works nicely on my desktop up close.

modern ir lightguns suck dick. its only real if its a crt and its scanning the flash

CRT light guns are better, but we're discussing playing on non-CRTs
>>
No. I used to play lightgun games co-op with a friend and whoever was P2 had to use the controller. It just fucking sucked all the time.

It's not "scanning the flash". A CRT lightgun works by literally just having a photodiode looking for white, and the second it sees white a timing circuit goes "HEY, I SAW WHITE!". If you know when the frame started to be drawn, you know how long through the draw cycle it was so you know the position.

Half the arcade games you probably liked used IR guns and you didn't even notice. Now, are HOME IR (and camera) guns any good? No, due to the minimum screen distance issue. It's funny that people act like we have "options" when your options are IR or camera in the gun, and both of these are bad. Or even worse, IMU or 2 point IR if you buy something really cheap. Any good non-CRT solution requires a large investment, because we're talking either a laser gun and projector setup, or some form of high precision 6DOF object tracking.
