Starflight (Genesis version) was about as ahead of its time as Shadowrun was, if not more so. It's basically Star Trek and you can land on any planet, mine for resources, interact or fight with alien ships you encounter and so on. The game came with a THICK manual that iirc doubled as a guide and book telling the story of the game.
Rings of Power also had a huge manual and was basically The Elder Scrolls for Genesis. You can fight with NPCs, go anywhere, etc.
Genesis had some of the best RPGs of the 16-bit era but for some reason they still mostly fly under the radar.
