Just a heads up, I actually played this game a bunch without knowing there's a much-improved sequel, nippon oozumou gekitou honbashohen. It makes the gameplay slightly less obtuse and lets you do a full 15 day basho and even view the AI matches.

The Japanese guy who wrote an insane amount of detailed information for the Garouden PS2 game also wrote a good bit about this game here:
