all these triple-A titles gathering dust in my library and here I am playing Doom 64
i hear you i never even finished nu doom
>>12620592Every time I try to play this one I'm put off by how dog shit it looks and the shitty controls compared to classic Doom. Maybe some day it will click.
>>12620601Just play the Doom 64 for Doom II mod
>>1262060164 has the best aesthetic out of all Doom games and it's not even close.
>>12620592The music is so dark and dreary but oddly soothing. System Shock 2 is similar in that regard.
>>12620601If you enjoy good Doom map design, it will never click. Almost a third of the maps are made by Tim Heydelaar, the worst mapper to ever work on official doom content. Every time the game starts to get going and you think it might be a decent map set, you get a Tim Heydelaar map where the map is a giant ugly fucking square with no detailing, the gameplay loop is braindead, and the puzzles are simultaneously confusing and fucking braindead once you do figure out the solution. If you like Doom 64's atmosphere, PS1 Doom has the same atmosphere, without the absolutely terrible level design and fanfic-tier enemy/weapon art.No one fucking liked this game until it rereleased on Switch, and only the unciest of unctendies like it now.
>>12620592>DOOM 64 with artificial superbrightness You did not beat the game.
>>12620807/thread OP is a sissy
>>12620768Enjoy your ugly pre-rendered sprites and lack of wall contrast
>>12621135nta but wall contrast is gay. razor sharp stone edges break immersion
>>12621135To be fair, Doom 64 was meant to be played darker than that. A lot of screenshots that I see of Doom 64 now are closer to what the original game looked like with the Light Amplification Visor powerup (as in, it normally looked nothing like that)
>>12620592it do be like that
>>12620673>Just play the Doom 64 for Doom II modYeah, this. You don’t get the ‘atmosphere’ but you arguably get more complex gameplay because it keeps the D2 monsters. I think there’s even a mod that turns vanilla D1/D2 into D64 aesthetics.
>>12620592Albeit some of the graphics suck it's a really cool entry in the Doom franchise.Playing it on the N64 was kinda hard though.
>>12620592Play what you want. Life's too short to care about what other people say you should be playing. Yes I know I sort of contradicted myself there, and I don't care.
>>12621862I emulated Doom 64 like 20 years ago and it was way too fucking dark to see shit. I can't blame people for playing with the gamma turned up at all.
I remember running it with Project64? and a Voodoo2 - I was beyond impressed.
>>12620673Then you're just playing Doom II, not Doom 64. You didn't beat the game.
>>12621862Wall shading doesn't agree with levels that are too dark indeed
>>12620785>the worst mapper to ever work on official doom contentreally? worse than sandy petersen?>No one fucking liked this game until it rereleased on Switchi liked it when it released on n64 :(
>>12624180>Then you're just playing Doom II, not Doom 64.That's fine.
>>12624186Petersen mapped like 60% of Doom 1 and 2. His "hell is playing tricks on you" map style is much better than Heydelaar's.
>>12620673Gay
>>12620785Fuck off, Sandy. You will always be the worst mapper.
>>12620673>Doom 64 for Doom IIWhy would you do that when there's Doom64 EX?
>>12620592This is the only Doom game to actually scare me. Doom '93 is still the best though.
>>12624510Why would I subject myself to shitty pre-rendered sprites?
>>12620592i recently played doom for the first time on ps1 on my chinkheldwas an extremely good time. I dont even like fps games but had a blast. except for purgatory, fuck that stage. only time I had to look up a walkthrough.
