Why is FF8 not as popular/critically acclaimed as FF7?

The junction system at the time was not well-articulated or many of fanbase like myself weren't well-versed in Microsoft Excel gameplay loop of Draw and Junction. As an adult I can tolerate it, back as a child I hated it. The orphanage twist makes no fucking sense to send people into a coma like Rinoa, lol.The main problem isn't really the gameplay per se, it just has no "narrative" hook or heart to it. IMO that's why the Sorceress being a future Rinoa captivated people to headcanon it so hard or that Squall is dead after the failed assassination in Disc 1, people wanted to draw (heh) out of the barebones shitty plot FF8 had. Wasn't one of the rival Balamb Garden academdies led by Cid's estranged ex wife? A shitty primary villain, the primary human level rival to Squall was a literally fucking SIMP who gave up on a character arc just to drink Sorceress bath water, and your big reveal is an orphanage coma and child soldier program worldwide. Felt lacking a punch.Also Quistis should've been the main love interest or optional romance choice. Rinoa isn't even in the top 10 Nomura raven hair girls like FF14 Gaia, Lulu FFX, and Neo The World Ends With You Shoko.

Gameplay of FF8 discourse falls into the people who hate it and the people who love it. The problem is the people who love it run into the issue that discussing leads you into the card game and how actively avoidining combat is the best way to play the game for a good chunk, making your setup pointless and all the meaty discussion about how to best "break" the game through triple triad.The plot as mentioned falls apart without a core pillar. Laguna just isn't it as a mystery man that makes or breaks the game. The Sorceress is so underdeveloped that people have headcanon the fringe theories Squall died in their first encounter or that she's a future Rinoa. TBQH the only lane that FF8 operates on is the slow burner comfy game because you can disable all encounters without a cheat modifier and focus on the story at your own pace and play the card game. The big debates about FF7's girls Aerith, Yuffie, Tifa and FF10's Yuna, Rikku, Lulu doesn't exist with FF8 which is a fascinating mystery because it is even set in high school to a graduating class of 18 year olds. It has all the elements of a potential SquareEnix style Persona game with romance, turn based mechanics, JRPG mini games and SquareEnix runs away from it. I know about Rinoa and Quistis but who was the third girl from Kingdom Hearts?

The story largely sucks, doing the carding, refining, and low level stuff makes the game JUST the story. When enemies level up they gain new abilities and drop different items / steals, keeps things slightly fresh.

It's basically a mess of a game and the best part of the game is Triple Triad rather than the story or the combat. However, you are right that the first Zelda is my favorite. Then you have series like Street Fighter, and most definitely the first ones I played of the series are not favorites of mine. It's really just on a case by case basis which doesn't necessitate the first being the favorite.
