It was a lot like how it still is today. Games designed primarily for singleplayer will have a split screen mode tacked on top that is cool in theory but in practice nobody cares to take the time to set up and play. I have a hard time believing anyone with 4 Dukes sitting around played anything but Halo split-screen.
