What's the best version of this game?
The version closest to my heart is the DOS port that was basically just the C64 version without much done to it. The version in Day of the Tentacle is still in the modern release running on SCUMMVM too, but I think that is the DOS port with the much better graphics.as long as you aren't playing on hardware from when the game was new, it should be good because it won't run like a slideshow. The NES version is cool too but is censored somewhat (besides one infamous thing).idk I always liked the Eds to have regular human skin colors instead of having spooky blue skin...
>>12623459I was playing the NES version but got frustrated with the UI and realized that I should probably just play one of the PC versions. And after learning that the NES version was censored I didn't want to play it as much
>>12623439Original uncensored NES release
>>12623471It's funny because they censored what little blood there was, naked statues, and mildly raunchy dialogue and background props... but not one of the most cruel acts you can commit in any video game: microwaving Weird Ed's hamster until it explodes then giving the gory remains back to Ed, who then murders you on the spot
>>12623439The fan-made Maniac Mansion Deluxe. If the original exe doesn't work you can launch it with the current version of ScummVm.It also removed some soft-locks and that might be a deal breaker or a QOL improvement depending on your tastes.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPEkRks_uX8
SCUMMVM supports the NES version with mouse controls. I like it but for dumbass reasons they won’t support the beta uncensored NES version because it was leaked/stolen or whatever.
>>12623495>they won’t support the beta uncensored NES versionthat's very gay of them
>>12623495>SCUMMVM supports the NES version with mouse controls. I like it but for dumbass reasons they won’t support the beta uncensored NES version because it was leaked/stolen or whatever.They won't support it because they operate under the idea that "we can ONLY work on games we have a physical copy of", and whoever has the prototype isn't going to lend it to the SCUMMVM devs to satisfy their autism. Someone could hack support into SCUMMVM, but you would need to map out the prototype ROM the same way the SCUMMVM devs mapped out the other NES versions. Here's how they did it for the US rom:static const ScummNESFile::Resource res_roomgfx_usa[40] = { { 0x04001, 0x03C9 }, { 0x043CA, 0x069E }, { 0x04A68, 0x0327 }, { 0x04D8F, 0x053B }, { 0x052CA, 0x06BE }, { 0x05988, 0x0682 }, { 0x0600A, 0x0778 }, { 0x06782, 0x0517 }, { 0x06C99, 0x07FB }, { 0x07494, 0x07BE }, { 0x08001, 0x07A5 }, { 0x087A6, 0x06DD }, { 0x08E83, 0x04EA }, { 0x0936D, 0x0846 }, { 0x09BB3, 0x08C8 }, { 0x0A47B, 0x0844 }, { 0x0ACBF, 0x0515 }, { 0x0B1D4, 0x0799 }, { 0x0B96D, 0x04BB }, { 0x07C52, 0x0319 }, { 0x0C001, 0x0464 }, { 0x0C465, 0x076D }, { 0x0CBD2, 0x0827 }, { 0x0D3F9, 0x0515 }, { 0x0D90E, 0x064E },There's a lot more like this, all manually mapped addresses on the ROM for all the info the game needs. Because they aren't going to emulate the NES entirely, they are just going to pull the data needed to run the game. I have no idea if there's any addressing differences between the prototype and the final, but that would need to be resolved to make the prototype work with SCUMMVM.
>>12623786Like I said. Their reasoning is dumb and ass.
>>12623484isn't the dead character still playable but invisible after that or is that a different version?
>>12623489this
>>12624086I think the dead ghost characters are playable on all versions. They can't interact with anything but they can move through open doors and explore without fear of being captured or whatever.
>>12623439The 1989 DOS 'Enhanced' release with Tandy 1000 music and sound, played on ScummVM with enhancements and bug fixes enabledSame also applies for Zak McKracken.
>>12624464based zak enjoyer
>>12624684256 colours or no, to me Zak just isn't Zak without his cheesy proto-Dreamworks smirk.
>>12623489I feel the Deluxe graphics are a downgrade
>>12626417to each their own i guess
>>12626417It's missing animations and frames, especially on Green and Purple Tentacle (just makes it look really cheap). The music from Day of the Tentacle feels out of place, also.
>>12626697fan remakes are universally not as good as the original, it's the law
>>12626697the few missing frames are not a big trade-off
>>12626697>>12626726>>12626735Not any of you anons BUT I just think the characters look best in their original low res forms on C64 and DOS. The enhanced graphics look off to me.
>>12626740You and I are in agreement
