How can I get my home emulation set-up audio closer to the kind of hollow and slightly distorted sound that comes out of an arcade cabinet?
>>
Hesuvi kind of sounds like this actually with a few of the presets

Boost mids on your EQ, bring down lows and highs a bit.

Quick rundown pls for how it interacts with /vr/ usages, especially RetroArch.

Suggestions for Windows 10 compatible software? Thoughts on Equalizer APO?

Got a wooden dresser near your PC? Put the speakers inside.

Embrace mono, and attach that one speaker to the inside of an oddly-shaped wooden box.

and don't forget to smoke 6 packs per day around it until the tar partially clogs the slits

You could get a shit speaker and make poorly designed enclosure for it. Small driver, way too much air, probably still use a hi pass filter because modern speakers will be too good at pushing low frequencies.

Buy a vintage arcade speaker, hook it up to a small amp, then mount it in a plywood box.

My new idea for the "arcade cube".
it contains

-a 6" mono speaker
-a nintendo style coin mechanism
-a coin bucket
-a small form factor pc or fpga device
-a small amp for the speaker
-a power strip
-an i/o panel for the pc audio and video
-adjustable feet

The cube is sized just right in height for a person to sit an arcade stick controller on top of the box and have it be around the height of the control panels on most sit-down arcade cabinets. Or you can sit a CRT or other monitor on top of it. I think with a plywood case the 6" speaker should sound very authentic.

I think I can build this for about $300, maybe...

I just did this and it worked a lot better than I expected.
