Why does bullet spread and recoil exist, it doesn’t in shmups

There was this race in Gran Turismo 3 where it was designed to have you go up a inclined road while the sun is right at the top of it and blinding you the whole time.

It's pretty much the only time when the sun glare actively blinds you and I feel like it happened only on that one track.

i'm pretty sure there is recoil and bullet spread in STALKER 1. there's also recoil in various games including the classik Desu Sex 1. IIRC there is bullet spread in Mechwarrior 3 and 4, but it seems to be cosmetic. the bullet spread just makes it easier for you to hit stuff with the "shotgun" autocannons in the games.

both statements are misleading. because the hitscan weapons like the pistol in DOOM don't have spread or any real recoil that can throw off your aim?
but sure, Tyrian 2000 don't have recoil or bullet spread. though in shoot em uppers, bullet spread usually meant those weapons that shoot out ballsy bullets in a cone shape.

What OP mentions is an early attempt at realism just like the awful bobbing and tilting. I always turn that stuff off, unnerving if they hide it in the config somewhere. Might be okay for military fps where they fuck with the weapons to no end anyway. But in arcade shooters like Quake or UT?

Nope. That shit was stupid as hell in System Shock 2. Yes it was easy to stock up on maintenence tools but you had to waste points on maintenence which is bullshit.

It's fun in STALKER if you play the game aggressively, the increased odds of a gun jam at a critical point in a shootout is a nice little "oh shit" where the half second to unjam it carries a lot of risk but doesn't waste time.

I feel like it adds something to Fire Emblem, where you have weapons like rapiers which are stronger but have limited uses, so you're rewarded for being able to recognize when you really need them and when you don't.
But I'll also admit that when I switch to an SRPG that doesn't have weapon durability it's like a huge weight's been lifted from my shoulders.

Bullet spread allows you to further slow down the game by punishing player movement. You go from a movement heavy game like Quake without spread to broken legs in CS.

Recoil obviously came with the rise of 'realistic' shooters, but it actually makes the gun more tactile. It's fun to try various guns and see how their recoil affects your enjoyment. Imagine if you're seeing a big chunky LMG with slowish fire rate unleashing large caliber bullets with all the bang and muzzle flash, but then it just shoots perfectly straight like everything else.
