This game is completely overrated.

1. New moves are useless. The backflip has zero utility. The whip extension is so short that it barely makes any real difference. There are no encounters that are designed to force these new moves.
2. The alternate B-route levels are all shit. Most of them are unfinished. Map 5B (Hidden Docks) is arguably the worst. It looks like it was slapped together in less than 5 minutes. Dracula X Chronicles on the PSP actually fixes this issue and makes the B routes good.
3. Maria completely breaks the game. There is no excuse to make her so insanely strong. If you want to actually have a challenge, you basically have to not use her. Meanwhile, Castlevania Bloodlines, which came out only a year after Rondo of Blood, had two characters that were far better balanced.
4. It's not even very challenging even with Richter. People shit on Dracula X, and even though visually the game is awful compared to Rondo, it still is actually properly challenging.

The only reasons people hold this game up in such high regards is because it's a prequel to Symphony of the Night and because of its graphics (which admittedly are very beautiful).

Otherwise, Super Castlevania 4 (which came out before ROB) and Bloodlines (which came out a year after ROB) are both way better games.

How many years have you been at this now?

Bait threads like this really make me fucking wish for /vr/ to be deleted and made into a thread in /vg/.
Our traffic is slow and many of our games are discussed in /vrpg/ and /vst/. No one would miss the board at this point.

Did you think you were original with this post?

All 4 of your points are correct, and yet it's still the best game ever made.

1. Bait, the backflip is used during several bosses, especially boss 5 with the skeleton dragon and thing that jumps from the bottom of the screen

2. No

3. It's easy mode, as plenty of games have

4. It's not braindead easy, but not tough as nails like 3.

I do agree that it is overrated. It's really really good, but not like best game ever made or anything. Not even the best in it's series

>The backflip has zero utility.
I wouldn't go that far, but I actually dislike the mechanic because it's total anime nonsense that a regular human can't do in real life. One aspect I enjoy from my favorite Castlevanias is how the characters' movements are grounded in realism, which makes them feel more human.

As for the rest of your points, yeah, this game was the beginning of the end (SotN and its kin).

The backflip can be used to jump out of reach of the spear knights. This is from XX but it's the same principle in X.

Gamers in 1993: Dude check out Richters backflip its so cool
Gamers in 2026: Erm the backflip has no utility

All those players who played Dracula X in 1993 in the west. It was a classic on Konami's Turbo Graphix 16.

dracula x has shittier controls and gave me a bad impression of rondo thinking they were 1:1. rondo's jump is much quicker and has more horizontal reach.
