I outright refuse to believe people got stuck on this shit back in the day. Even if english isn't your first language and you don't know it's a slang term for an adjustable wrench, there's always the adventure game fallback of "try everyone on everything" in a game that has no actual fail states.
The fucking "if this is X, what's this?" puzzle takes longer to figure out because it's just based on some obscure game Schafer would play with his cousin.

I'm Australian and I've never heard of a "monkey wrench" before; I call them spanners.
>>
>>12628756
even in the uk a spanner is a non-adjustable bolt/nut tool. a monkey wrench, a pipe wrench, is adjustable.
>>
>>12628767
They're all spanners here mate. If you need to disambiguate you'd call them adjustable, but there's no such thing as a monkey spanner.

Did the sonic barrel filter you?
>>
>>12628770
you guys are retarded then. but, it's more likely that's it's just you personally don't know shit about tools. your plumber uses a wrench, for sure.

LucasArts adventure games are known for these joke puzzles. The first monkey island had a solution to the troll being a literal red herring when he asks for something not important and meant to distract you.
Honestly the monkey wrench isn't even near the most obtuse thing in these games.
>>

>your plumber uses a wrench, for sure.
Nah, he'd call it a shifting spanner, or just a spanner.
>>
>>12628780
a shifting spanner would be a crescent wrench here. i'm talking about a pipe wrench, a monkey wrench.
your plumber uses one and can't order it by calling it a spanner.
now you know.
>>
>>12628781
Nobody says wrench here except for zoomers who were raised on American media.
>>
>>12628783
hey, it's okay. you aussies are ornery i know and can't accept truth so i'm not expecting you to accept the truth publicly.
it's obvious you don't do plumbing though.
>>
>>12628785
Come on man, first the yanks teach us all their words and now they tell us which words we do and don't use? Soon enough the Australian man won't be able to say anything at all.
>>
>>12628793
You most definitely need to stop talking like babies and referring to breakfast as 'brecky' or chocolate milk as 'choccy milk'. That would be a great start.

IIRC, the German version told you that the monkey kinda looks like a wrench now if you inspect it.

That's never satisfying though. I like the puzzles in MI2, but I actually think that's one of the reasons some LucasArts games had such bad puzzles: by removing fail states it's easier to get away with badly designed puzzles which are "solved" by just trying weird shit until something happens. Playtesters would never get completely stuck. Removing fail states is great though, don't get me wrong, but it makes it easier for developers to be lazy. It doesn't automatically make the puzzles good.
>>
>>12628783
>nobody says wrench here
>except for an entire generation of people

Then it would be "Only zoomers who say that", not "Nobody", you retard.
>>
>>12629168
I didn't say the "entire generation" of zoomers do, but the specific subsection who weren't raised Aussie.
>>
>>12628770
We call them AJ's as well in the UK. All makes sense. Foo Fighters have a song called Monkey Wrench too, back in the day before they became massive
>>
>>12628778
Yep. I played the first Monkey Island in Spanish and the "How to Get Ahead in Navigating" puzzle wasn't (couldn't be) localized properly so I had to brute force it, leaving a sour taste from what was otherwise a pretty good game.

it's actually super satisfying when a combination finally clicks and triggers an animation in your character after having to sit through hundreds of "Nah... that doesn't work!"
>>
>>12629270
Always a risk that you take when you use puns. Had a friend in advertising who said they attempted to avoid puns for any international products because it was a nightmare trying to translate it adequately.
>>
In my language it's pretty much called a french key, so this monkey stuff is absolutely foreign for most of Europeans unless you are a very western country like France where they ironically call it the English key!

These insular low IQ subhumans are loathsome creatures. So many of them as well. Grim.

>The fucking "if this is X, what's this?" puzzle
The funny thing is the solution is way easier than people think and people just overanalyze it. You ignore everything he's saying and just tell him how many fingers he put up the first time.
