well yeah it's a shmup
>>
>best games from a 40 year old console are already known
Shocker

This game is just kind of weird. It's not bad, it's just kind of weird despite being well done. The shmup sections deviate from a traditional shmup because it's strongly power sup and RPG based. The damage is practically unavoidable so you need the leveled up enough and have the right weapons equipped for the shmup sections. Which you get from the overhead sections. It actually ties both genres together really well, it's just that if you like shmups this is not a pure shmup and if you like RPG's then this is a shmup. If you like both you might enjoy it or have a hard time enjoying it paradoxically.

It's a good game, I enjoyed it but I did find it tedious at times. The gameplay did become a bit formulaic, you unlocked a new area, got the 2 key power ups from it, did the shmup stage and boss then rinse-repeat. It did drag on long and the password system was horrible. The music was excellent. Overall very good game, somewhat niche.
>>
>>12628947
Well done? The game has 10x worse jarpiggy grinding crap than even Zelda II, you can steamroll with your eyes closed or basically auto-lose because you deal no damage and get one-shot by unavoidable damage, purely based on how much powerups you found through exploring. There is no reason to engage with any of the enemies at all, there is no reason to use the subweapons as max chips gets you an infinite ammo stronger primary weapon, the environments are extremely bland, constantly reused, and all blend together, the shmup sections are full of dead air, bosses have incredibly shallow and repetitive movesets and massive healthbars, the artstyle is garish, the lack of save with insanely long passwords with gibberish characters is obnoxious.

What is one thing this game even does well? The music?

I dropped this piece of shit after about 10 minutes a while back, and decided to give it a second chance. I should have trusted my gut, this game SUCKS.
>>
>>12628958
Forgot to mention character movement is so slow, constant slow screen transitios, constant slow teleporters, constant slowly chipping away at blocks, constant backtracking, extremely tedious gameplay loop where you just do the same cycle 10+ times with little change, even the enemies and environments look near identical.

This dude gets filtered by a new game every day. At least when I got filtered by Breakdown and made a thread about it a few days ago I had the willpower to give it another chance. I ended up liking it a lot too.

I don't like this game either but OP is being a fag.

>oh nooooo you have to collect things and there are screen transitions and backtracking and some weapons aren't very useful!!!!
Do you also complain about this in Zelda? Rethorical question, of course you don't.

>well regarded game is... le bad!
>>
>>12629169
It released years after Zelda and worse than both of them in just about every way.

As much I think Zelda 2 is a downgrade to 1, it absolutely blows games like this out of the water, so I gotta give credit there.

>>12629269
It's not really well regarded. People play five minutes, go "well I guess that was kinda cool but not really for me" and drop it.

>>12629127
Filtered? I already beat it on original hardware (MiSTer) with no help. The game does get better in the middle. It's poorly designed shit but still a decent turn your brain off type game. It goes full retard at the end with the balance though. You basically need to have every single upgrade or you just get one-shot by extremely tanky enemies. The corridor 8 boss for some reason has an absolute absurd amount of HP, and one of the minibosses in the final area just floods the screen with bouncy projectiles that require insane DPS to kill, have no idea how you are supposed to do that without spamming like 100 bombs. And boss 10 is annoying as fuck backtracking if you die on the final boss and sitting through the boring shmup section where they spam 500 enemies at you

Overall a strong 4/10. Zelda 2 mogs

Yeah that's a general issue with RPGs and action games with RPG mechanics from that era. They often devolve into grinding enough levels/resources that you overpower the game but if you don't meet the threshold there's very little strategy you can employ to make up for it. They're very brute force focused games.
>>
>>12629774
It was my biggest problem with Symphony of the Night. Dracula COULD be difficult if you were underleveled and had limited gear, but by the time you get there (and I guess especially true for a first playthrough since you probably wound up leveling a lot as you explored/tried to find where to go next), you're so overleveled and stocked up that you wind up just brute forcing through.
I remember first realizing what was happening when I reached Death and breezed through the fight like it was nothing.
I guess it's something hard to combat, short of having specific "choke" points that scale the boss power to make sure you're never really overleveled, maybe even locking you in to specific gear, so that leveling only impacts fights with regular enemies
>>
>>12629797
At least with SOTN it's relatively reasonable to challenge yourself to do it underleveled and underequiped if you're good at dodging stuff. With a lot of NES games so much damage is nearly unavoidable that you simply have to brute force it.

Your fault for playing a fucking NES game in 2026, they are all too simple and too clanky, or straight up unfair as per the Arcade coin munching mindset of the time

Neither of these statements are true at all. Guardian Legend being bad doesn't change that NES has plenty of great games I've enjoyed

My top 10 would probably be
>1. Legend of Zelda
>2. Super Mario Bros 1
>3. Jackal
>4. Mega Man 4
>5. Contra
>6. Castlevania 3
>7. Super C
>8. Mega Man 3
>9. Kirby's Adventure
>10. Castlevania 1

Honorable mentions:
>Zelda 2
>Mitsume Ga Tooru
>Mega Man 1
>Mega Man 2
>Life Force
>Gradius
>Gradius 2
>Super Mario Bros 2J
>Super Mario Bros 3
>Punch Out
>Battletoads
>Ninja Gaiden
>Rescue Rangers

Guardian Legend is just a low-tier game.

Nah it's more like B-Movie appeal, it has a certain charm and could almost be a contender but makes some strange or poor choices.

Probably hard to call this a hidden gem nowadays, considering it regularly ranks somewhere on "best NES games" lists.

It's a game that combines 2 different genres, but it does both of those genres extremely poorly.
But for some reason, sticking them together in a single game makes people think it's amazing for some stupid reason.

That game blows. And by the way, when it came out it did not review well. EGM, one of the few outlets to review it, gave it 6 / 5 / 6 / 7.
I think one other mag reviewed it and gave it 70.

The praise for this game only came about when people too young to have played it on release discovered it via emulation and thus the "le hidden gem" tag was applied to it.

t. owns a mint conditon CIB copy that i bought for peanuts about 20 years ago before anyone knew about it, and spent many hours forcing myself to play it.
>>12629965
Horse shit. There are plenty of fantastic 3rd generation games that are immensely enjoyable today.
>Arcade coin munching
Another horse shit meme perpetuated by people too young to understand how video games were made at the time (They were made by small teams, the programmers were the ones testing the games, and thus they made them hard because they thought they were too easy, NOT because they wanted to steal you coins or to artificially extend the length of the games etc. Nowdays games are focus tested on women, which is why they are much easier).
>>
>>12630573
It's not bad, it's a strange in between middle ground of genres that kind of presents a diluted version of each. Which impacts the appeal in odd ways.
>>
>>12630784
>>12630784
It's terrible at both, the two don't even interact in any way, and it's basically just two sloppy halves lazily frankensteined together.

It's not even like top 500 of NES library
>>
>>12630826
You kind of just have to take it for what it is. I did and I enjoyed it. But it dragged on for a while and got repetitive. As far as NES games go I think it's definitely very good, not among the best but it represents a time where technology was limited so designers tried new things and it's fine. There is no reason to be upset.
>>
>>12630826
The two interact pretty well.
>>
>>12630901
They barely interact at all you fucking moron. The only way they even interact is the shitty RPG upgrade garbage, which is incredibly poorly implemented, and the game is full of bullet sponges and unavoidable damage and basically impossible without all upgrades. So the only possible interaction they have is a net negative.

Genuinely don't get how anyone could think either the top-down or shmup sections are done well unless they've never played a single game in either genre.
>>
>>12630926
>is full of bullet sponges and unavoidable damage and basically impossible without all upgrades.
The point of the game is to get the upgrades so you can do the shmup sections. Have you ever played a shmup by Compile before? Their mainline shmups are like this too, but to a lesser extent. Compile is known for this, you have to use the right weapons for the section and need to do resource management too, for extra lives, bombs, etc. GL represents it in it's extreme, but you can see the Compile here clearly. Only they could have made this game.
