Except it ruins the original mood and the original vision. The fogginess and grainyness is the APPEAL of the game and is built into the nerve and aesthetic of the experience. This is why only the gamecube (best) and Wii (easier but acceptable) are the only real ways to play the game in the original style. You are not supposed to SEE for 200 meters in any direction at any time.

By getting superclean and highly detailed textures in you feel like you are in some glossy fake themepark and not in a Spanish castle of multiple horrors. What you can't see fully is what adds nerve and mood to the game, it is part of the grainy horror aesthetic. Also, playing the game on a modern controller like dualshock 4 makes the aiming too easy because the gamecube controller had way less travel and a much smaller "sweetspot" where you could do controlled aiming (like headshots), this made positioning before the engagements much more crucial to get the necessary distance to the targets (as well as re-positioning during the fight if needed), with a modern controller you just headshot heashot legshot duplex your way to victory unabated. Too clear visuals and easymode aiming = unauthentic shooting-gallery experience (which is sort of what the wii game is but at least it looks authentic if slightly washed out).

>>12629454Because combined with modern day high resolution and a much cleaner framebuffer compared to the original it pushes the game into easymode from the high res visuals providing full overview of the environment and a fog that doesnt truly limit player visuals anymore (the oversampled framebuffer is main culprit here). The player is in control at all times. Combined with a modern controller the game loses all tension and becomes an easy shooting gallery for beta redditors. Pc version + high res textures + modern controller = toddler difficulty.

They went out and looked around for all the source images they believe or know the original artists used as reference material, traveling around to take the pictures needed to get the details. That's what they used to model and texture everything in HD. Going through the blog is a wild ride of seeing them locate little details in the strangest places.
