So I just finished the first Tomb Raider, 4/10 game at times it almost starts getting fun but tedium and cheapness prevents it from actually being enjoyable for very long.
The camera was terrible, the controls are sluggish and delayed.
The combat is bare bones and braindead yet obnoxious because enemies have real movement unlike Lara's clunky, slow self and are hp sponges, if they get on top of you or corner you they can tear through your hp in seconds.
There are ambushes everywhere in absurd places and the final level was one of the worst I've ever played, insta-death trial error room after room after room and so on.
The visuals are also terrible, from the models, to the environments to the tile texturing being the worst I've ever seen.
My question is this. Is the first game the rough draft that the series builds on to a competently made series or is this it, is this what Tomb Raider is?

If you did not enjoy the exploration, atmosphere, climbing and puzzles in TR1 enough to compensate for its weaknesses, the changes in later Core games are unlikely to be enough to make you enjoy them much more. You should know within the first room of TR2 if you're willing to continue.

The TR1 story has never been beaten. TR2 nailed the classic level design. TR3 nailed the gameplay. TR4 is the best overall classic product but isn’t the best at any one thing. TR5 is terrible.

IMO TRA is the pinnacle of the series and is the only one worth playing in 2026.

The story in TR is basically that the big bad is the same as Wesker's goal in RE5, forcing evolution on humanity through harsh mutations.

The atmosphere was okay for the most part, that is when you weren't fighting silly motherfuckers like a guy skateboarding, firing uzis and spouting Pulp Fiction parody lines.
All the humans were silly and the locals are not varied enough to keep you from getting bored of the same thing after a while.
Lara also moves so slowly that simple tasks and traversing takes so long.
What I would like to see in the next game is moves that are pulled off quicker and are initiated quicker, along with being able to switch actions instead of having to wait for an animation to play out fully before you are allowed to do something else and the camera lagged so far behind Lara at times and went ape shit in tight spots, particularly in combat.
Well, I'll try TR2 for a while and see if any of my quibbles were addressed.

I recently replayed the first TR (remaster but with original graphics mode), and honestly I had just as much fun now as I remember having back then. Maybe TR just isn't your cup of tea.

If you had this much trouble with the first game just give up now and play something easier. TR1 is one of the easiest games of that gen.

I've played 2 a bit now and it feels more responsive and she moves a bit faster, so far so good, it seems they upgraded the camera too.
Now it needs sharp level design and it will be a much better experience.
Not sure how I feel about the changes to saving, it would cut down on frustration but it seems too forgiving.

Why are you playing the Playstation versions? Get the GOG releases of the originals and use the widescreen patch (if wanted). It's the same exact game just with instant load times and better, clearer graphics. Looks even better than the remasters on classic mode also.

Why lie all faggot like?

The problem is your attitude.
It's an old 3d game, buddy. You have to consider that when rating. For it's time it was 4 stars out of five!

I get tomb raider. I get why the tank controls and grid platforming eventually make sense and become satisfying, it clicked with me. the problem is that the devs saw fit to staple on a bunch of gratuitous flavor animation to that system that act as basically a brick wall for how smoothly you can play the game. need to make a small adjustment for a 1 tile jump? you need to watch lara's slow as fuck walk animation. need to adjust to in front of switch just so? you need to endure lara's slow as fuck side step animation. grab a ledge, something you're going to do 100s of times through the game? you need to watch lara's slow as fuck scaling animation. knowing that I was always only ever going to be able to play as well as slow indulgent animations allowed kind of soured me on enduring the relentless challenge the game presents on top of that.
