How come half of N64 library is racing games and yet only like two of them are good?

https://youtu.be/DSzgzIWWbrU

Not to mention, the hardware is known for low framerates and bad draw distances, why would anyone make a racing game on it?
>>
most n64 racing games are good, but they're often short because of cartridge limitations. yet no loading times, which was nice.
>>
>>12633608
Yeah, 64 has plenty of racing games, sadly most of them don't have basic physics involved
>>
>>12633608
Uh oh snoy melty
>>
>>12633608
Even the 2d powerhouse Sega Saturn has better racing games
>>
>>12633608
3D racing game is an equivalent of 2D shooter - what you make on a low budget.
There's little math involved and it's not the least popular genre.
>>
>>12633608
N64 games look so fucking ugly.
>>
>>12633627
Yeah but ps1 looks worse
>>
>>12633630
Unm no sweaty, thats a mirror
>>
>>12633608
>How come half of N64 library is racing games and yet only like two of them are good?
Not enough cart space for detailed tracks, cars and soundtracks. nobody bothered to try that hard because of the shitty limitations.

>>12633616
Have you tried creating more threads about the NES? maybe that will make the schizo voices stop screaming at you? lol.
>>
>>12633664
I mean, why did they keep releasing these mediocre racers on the platform that barely fit for the genre?
>>
It's weird how N64 didn't have a single Need for Speed game
>>
>>12633674
as arcade racers they werent that bad. beside before gran turismo all the more realistic racing games were confined on pc.
>>
>>12633697
Beetle Adventure Racing was basically a NFS game on the N64
>>

because it sold carts. also contracts to make certain titles are done well in advance (especially for ports of popular titles from other systems), and agreements to make games for all the latest consoles and handhelds. just cancelling a title for whatever platform costs big $. as long as it passes nintendo's internal review and testing teams, it can be published. expectations weren't that high since everyone knew how crippled the n64 was, including nintendo. The situation reminded me of how things were on the C64/Amiga/Atari ST getting all these half assed arcade ports. They existed because they made a lot of money despite being crap due to hardware limiations
>>
Rush 2049 the most fun 5th gen racing game.
>>
In all the racing games on the N64, the cars look like toys, it's unbelievable.
I prefer the N64 to the PS1.
I love the Ridge Racer series, but Ridge Racer 64 is undoubtedly one of the weakest in the series.
It's the only installment whose soundtrack wasn't sold commercially!

Back then, I had an N64, and a PS1 mainly for racing games.

>>12633776
Bettle Adventure should be decompiled so it can be used to port the NFS games to the N64.
>>
The Apple II GS was the machine that started it all for Nintendo.
>>
>>12634391
>Ridge Racer 64 is undoubtedly one of the weakest in the series
Because it was developed by W*sterners and has nothing to do with the actual Ridge Racer lineage. The same studio also completely fucked up their attempts at sequels to Wave Race and 1080 on the GameCube and were subsequently demoted to a handheld and support studio.
>>
>>12634391
>It's the only installment whose soundtrack wasn't sold commercially!
Does that have anything to do with it not being available in Japan until Nintendo Switch Online?
>>
>>12633608
Racing games are comparatively easy to make
>>
>>12633608
The cartridge really fucked Nintendo, most devs like the freedom of not really worrying about space anymore. Yeah technically the n64 was more powerful but the ps1 just offered way more.

Have you tried fact checking this statement not counting streaming as of 2026

Your post makes no sense.

Of course the RR64 soundtrack can be found on YouTube... that's not the point.
Besides, it's the only alternative for this game.

Back in the day, Ridge Racer had their soundtracks sold commercially in Japan, and later they had anniversary editions. For RR64, nothing!

I hope you're not listening to the Rage Racer or RRType 4 soundtracks on YouTube, even though they're easily found in better quality.

Currently playing this and it is really good. Plus diddy Kong, MK64 are top tier. The crusin series and San Francisco rush series on n64 are pretty fun, especially Rush 2. Idk, I’m not a big racer guy but n64 seemed to have quite a few and they were popular at the time as party games we played w friends. It also helped the 64 had 4 controller ports out of the box which was kind of a big deal at the time and thus facilitates in combination w all these party games, people playing together on this system. At 40, I still have girls tell me they will kick my ass at Mario kart and 9/10 times they mean MK64.
Beetle adventure racing, MK64, Rush 2 and 2039, and episode one racer are all considered really fun from the normies I’ve been around. Personally I love a lot of the racing games on n64 and it’s one of my least favorite genres. The no loading times helps a lot.
>>
>>12633608
its arcade racers were fantastic. sim racing, not so much. blame the carts.
>>
>>12634595
the PSX version looks ricer.

F1 World Grand Prix
World Driver Championship
Cruis'n World
Stunt Racer 64
Top Gear Rally
Top Gear Overdrive
Indy Racing 2000
RR64
Beetle Adventure Racing
Rush 2

Wave Race 64
Mario Kart 64
Diddy Kong Racing
Excitebike 64
Star Wars Racer
F-Zero X
Extreme-G
1080 Snowboarding
Snowboard Kids 1+2
Wipeout 64

I dunno, seems like a solid library of racing games, even some less stellar ones like Automobili Lamborghini or Off-Road Challenge are fun.
>>
>>12634697
I was talking about how a Rage Racer album was never sold commercially, not until it was put on streaming (Spotify) in 2026. I don't care about anniversary remix albums.
>>
>>12633608
>Mediocre64
Everything about this console is below average.
Performance, games variety, design (hardware, controller, appearance).
It only did well in north america because of their brainless consumerism.

Since there's only like two good racing games on the system, you'd think OP could actually name them instead of more shitty console warring bait.
>>
>>12633608
Ridge Racer 64 is actually an excellent game, specifically because it's one of the few N64 games with a solid framerate
>>
>>12633610
Aerogauge was the worst offender for this shit, Fzero with verticality and handbrake boosting, but it only has like 4 courses. At least the courses had the diverging paths you saw in that era a lot.
>>12633776
Anyone who doesn't find enjoyment in BAR has no soul. Always catches people by surprise how good it actually is.

RR64's is great, and you will NOT perform well unless you get good with analog, as opposed to so many PSX racing games where you can get by with the d-pad.
>>
RR64 is objectively better than the first 3 ridge racer games by the simple fact that it has more tracks
>>
>>12636027
yeah sure
>>
Excluding westoid slopware, N64 has only 3 racing games - Wave Race 64, F-Zero X and MK64. And only one of them is good.

RR games have always been cool and stylish. But RR64 is so ugly and uninspired that it barely feels like a part of the same series.
>>
>>12636091
When I was paying it I used the d pad just because I didn't wanna increase the wear and tear on my analog stick, did I miss it out?

ya cuz it would have zelda on it

The courses are so elaborate and alternate paths encouraged to the point nobody gives a fuck about the car selection.
>>
>>12637736
It's a fake RR title made by Americans. It's not a real Ridge Racer.
