One of my earliest gaming memories is playing Doom, because of its vivid colors. Perfectly fine. It was so obviously over the top that I never took it serious one bit, it was just cool seeing those spirtes explode into intense red.
That and Skyroads, I remember that 3D effect lke it was yesterday.

I kept all of my consoles and handhelds in excitement to experience this. My kids don't seem super interested in videogames like I thought they would be. I think its a result of me being a good and attentive parent. They are way more interested in creating things rather than consuming them. I want to play 3 player games with them so badly but they just don't have the same amazement for videogames and technology that I do. I easily escaped into videogame worlds because my home-life was bad and my talents and skills were neglected instead of nurtured by my parents. My kids are more interested in making things that could be used in videogames rather than playing them.

Oh no. I've seen what kirby does to kids. He's getting GTA as soon as he knows what a car and traffic is.

I've let my 3 year old play 5 mins of Mario world and sonic 3 so far, both on a gameboy micro and a chinkheld. I wanted to start her on some accessible games to not put her off but I'm also not pushing it. I never play games in front of her, like the other anon here we are raising her together with plenty of human interaction, creating things and playing and without screens to pacify her. It's really noticeable when we meet other families where the kids are allowed veg out in front of tvs and tablets for hours. If shes interested in a few years then it will be a nice family treat for us to play some video games together every now and again

You'll find that kids have their own drives and interests. I've played a variety of games with the kids watching and they respond differently depending on their personalities and the game in question. My son had loved cars and racing from a young age. He enjoyed Mario Kart (8 deluxe) a lot. But at one point he saw me playing F-Zero for SNES and was absolutely entranced. Became obsessed with F-Zero, only wanted to play that. Would go chalk up the driveway with F-Zero courses all with names derived from the real F-Zero courses.

He also likes Mega Man and is really into drawing out Mega Man levels on paper, with lots of spikes and platforms and lava and boss battles and so on (I did the same then when I was his age, drawing out pretend Super Mario Brothers levels)

I think there's something about the colorful clarity and simplicity of the 8-bit and 16-bit eras that distinctly appeals to some kids.

Won't force them to only play old games or anything, but I want them to have the frame of reference of a few classics, and more importantly I also want to make sure that they learn how to interact with a personal computer in a basic sense (how to use a mouse and keyboard, how to interact with folders and programs, how to install and uninstall programs, etc).

Then, if they never intend to use a computer again, shame, but fine, maybe they'll change their minds or need it for a job some day. Maybe they'll also like some old games, maybe they won't, but they can at least say that they've tried.

That's very adorable. But yes, if you're gonna introduce your kids to games, games which are aligned with what they already like makes a lot of sense.

I didn't mind not playing games with my parents since I've always preferred the singleplayer experience, but it vexed me how I never could get them to appreciate, or at least show any interest, in games like I did.
Except for one game. The Emperor's New Groove on PC. Mom found Kuzco hilarious and liked how the game was so much more colorful and lighthearted than the usual stuff I played (e.g., Quake). That was also the only one I ever got her to actually play, with me, because child me couldn't mash the buttons fast enough to outrun the panthers in the last Jungle Night level.
