just played through halflife and its expansions over the weekend, now im digging into the modsCurrently playing Gunman Chronicles which was a mod released as a real game and then abandoned back into mod status. Maybe one of the first mods to be sold as a real game, well before the steam store popularized the idea. and its goodwhat are some of your favorite HL mods? preferrable single player campaigns but as thread op ill allow you to be nostalgic about your favorite multiplayer mods too.
remember natural selection
USS Darkstar -- Fight aliens (no human enemies) while escaping a zoological research spaceship. Ammo can be tight so remember that you can break the metal boxes. I think this was released less than a year after HL and is very impressive. Same author who made They Hunger.Half-Life: Invasion -- Impressive new features (like location-based armor system), scripted events, and weapons. Has polarizing vehicle sections. French mod, so you need a subtitle file.Heart of Evil -- Apocalypse Now meets Resident Evil. Wacky zombie and military action in Vietnam that ends up feeling like an epic journey despite the goofiness. Play the original, not Napalm Edition.Sweet Half-Life -- Action-packed (though sometimes buggy) scripted events, cutscenes, a branching end sequence, and new enemies. Has some anime-style art and characters and a half-wacky, half-serious tone.Poke646 -- Probably the prettiest HL mod. Clean and realistic urban/sci-fi maps.Peaces Like Us -- Less polished than the rest but I have to put this on here because it has that "weirdo modder's solo creative project" feeling that I associate with the HL mod scene. It's an odd alternative future where humans and Xen aliens started working together, and it's got some weird and trippy dream sequences. Also has some tight platforming, the kind where you'll want to quicksave after each jump.
>ill allow you to be nostalgic about your favorite multiplayer mods too.thanks OP <3for me, it was The Specialists. basically a Matrix-themed mod, with Max Payne style bullet time, flips and dives, dual-wielding pistols ('akimbo') etc.but CRUCIALLY, a developer made a scriptable mod for it, AMX Mod. then people created role-playing scripts. i know RP tends to be pretty cringy, but there was something special about The Specialists RP. mappers made different cities with lockable/purchasable properties. all the script engine could really do was display text + menus on-screen, so you had: a wallet of cash, an inventory of (useless/pretend) items, and a job. that was it.so in this mod designed for fast-paced Matrix action, a bunch of us stood around all day pretending to be cops and reporters, waiting to see if the mafia guys would rob the bank any time this week. truly magical days.
>>12636759The Specialists is a truly kickass mp mod. Action HL is great as well.
>>12638404thanks, im already checking out poke646 and vendetta. Heart of Evil sounds really interesting>>12638461>>12638872surprised no ones ripped this off
If you play Poke646, make sure to play the sequel called Vendetta.
R.E.S.T.R.I.C.T.I.O.N - STALKER themed half life modAfraid of Monsters - Cry of Fear for HLThere were some others I have fond memories from playing over and over on Sven Coop I can't remember the names of.>Sweet Half Life Was that in Sweet Half Life or Residual Life? I always get those two mixed up.
i played delta particles this year and loved it. highly recommend
>>12638965>surprised no ones ripped this offi feel like TSRP spiritually survives through those GTA RP servers, although those guys are genuinely talented (we were just dumb kids using a game engine in a weird way).the actual action side of it, Warsow is /vr/ now and maybe still active (Quake engine, all about strafe jumping and cool flips).GunZ: The Duel wasn't HL engine but was some fun 'remember The Matrix?' free-to-play sludge. some generation will grow up not remember just how cool The Matrix Was.Paranoia and then Cry of Fear were two rare 'actually good' HL1 single player mods i remember hearing about, but i didn't play them very far.
some more modern stuff:Half-Life: Echoes which is kinda like Half-Life: More Modern and Cinematic. You might be thinking that Half-Life was already like that but the way it guides you and drops you into setpieces, you'll know what I mean.If you want absolutely absurd platforming and deathtraps with a lot of humor, try Hazardous Course, but I admit I stopped partway through this one because a lot of the jumps are intentionally brutal even with spamming quicksave. It's kinda like one of those masocore platformers where the humor is from deadly and trolly it is. Really well made though.
>>12639086didn't know about this one, thanks anon
>>12639053>R.E.S.T.R.I.C.T.I.O.N - STALKER themed half life modI was going to mention this but I can't find info on it being a Half-Life mod, I think it's actually an original map series for Sven.
>>12639140>absurd platforming and deathtrapsI'd say the epitome of this is the Halfquake Trilogy. (It's on Steam now, as a single mod combining the three entries.)I'm not a glutton for punishment or anything, but the thing is so damn artistically unique that I just had to keep going until I beat the first one and Amen, but not Sunrise (yet).Oh and it's creator, muddasheep, made some clips for the OST:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usxdMo-NYPkhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCWIXCoumVEhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IN6KvBIfcJYThe entire playlist is here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLvRgeUqSM4ff0NUENeh2JFKCEIgF6cMpQ>)
>>12639850Amen meant a lot to my adolescent mind. I still have to make time to play it again, as there's this hidden grave in one of the grassland maps where the author takes a moment to pontificate on the senselessness of life. It was just a dude in his 20s venting, and now that I'm in my 30s I wonder how much I'll relate to it.
>>12636759Are you looking into singleplayer or multiplayer? The mp ones are dead so you won't be able to relive them in their peakNatural Selection is made by Unknown Worlds (Subnautica) that basically plays like first person Starcraft where each player plays a Terran or Zerg unit, but 1 Terran player can play as the commander that goes into full RTS cursor view with building capabilities.Half-Life Rally built a full driving physics into the engineThe Specialists is a John Woo Matrix Face/Off akimbo shooter, you can kit out your guns with tacticool bullshit (by 2000s standards)They Hunger is a nice campy horror series of singleplayer mods
>>12639918Hostile Intent was a SWAT-like slower paced shooterCry of Fear is a horror singleplayer mod that is memed on by youtubers, probably one of the more talked about onesSven Coop is co-op Half-Life, like potentially 32 player Serious Sam-tier autism, that evolved into a pretty sophisticated platform/backend for custom coop maps
>>12639924Sven was really special once upon a time. Didn't care for the /v/ games where unironic faggots took over.
>>12639053>>12639105>>12639924>Cry of FearDamn this was an amazing total conversion mod. Reminds me of Condemned. Also They Hunger was good campy fun. Kinda jank and silly but I enjoyed it.There are some silly fun maps for sven coop I played with friends back in the day. Maybe not what you're looking for but they were pretty fun, I just don't remember what the maps/campaigns were called anymore.
>>12639924I played the shit out of Sven Coop back in the day, there still isn't really any other game like it. I wonder how active it is today.
>>12638461Used to play the shit out of this
Ispitatel IV is kino
They Hunger is THE classic Half Life 1 mod.
>>12640703Sven Coop has a semi decent population even nowadays but not like super massive or anything, the problem is however that a lot of the more popular servers these days have stupid gimmicks going on like everything killing you in one hit, having xp mods that utterly trivialize maps, or something like that. Very hit or miss tbqh
>>12638461Loved this game, but the sweats on it were fatal to the community. People abusing exploits out the ass just to dab on the 30 or 40 some players who played it.
>>12641597The "behind you, behind you" audio clip the headcrabs play lives rent free in my head.
Gunman Chronicles is fucking awesome and I love the last chapter that is basically like a sci-fi old western. Afraid of Monsters:DC will always be the best to me. Its shame the creator is a pedo and the spiritual successor Cry of Fear was such a bad game. I fucking loved Poke646 and its sequel. Half-Life: Echos is probably the closest to retail quality HL1 expansion you are ever going to find, although it leans a bit too much on ambitious scripted sequences sometimes.
