A proper game developer would have intelligently taught the player how to deal with the barrels. Like make some obstacle where projectiles are flying and the player is forced to press down while standing on a barrel so then they discover that the barrel moves.

Act 1 actually does have the barrels, but they move on their own and you can ride them around (pic related, this one in particular's going up) so that's what people learn. Then they get to Act 2 and suddenly the rules changed, but there's absolutely no indication that you need to move it yourself by alternating up and down in order to progress. Even the manual for all regions says nothing about it.
