In fact, MAME had a fatal error in their emulation of Rampart that went undiscovered for fucking ages because no one apparently ever beat level 4 and encountered the crash until Haze ran across the error while streaming the game.

Yeah because it's a multiplayer game people played with their friends and so they have good memories of it. Modern world is all online BS which isn't the same at all. It's still pretty fun to play single player if you're looking for a low-key game with a few puzzly tetris-like elements and simple action.

The Famicom version (specifically Famicom, the NES version is different) is pretty fun. It’s Japanified and consists of scenarios instead of the same warships every time. The Game Boy version (specifically DMG, GBC version is a different game) is also interesting. It’s closer to the arcade game in terms of gameplay but on land and less coin eating annoying.

RAMPART, Atari Games, Milpitas, 1990.

John Salwitz writes the code that makes castles, cannons, ships, timers, scores, trackballs, self-test and operator settings behave, and he and Dave Ralston shape the rules: build walls fast, place guns, blast, repair, repeat.

Dave Ralston gives the game its look - the medieval map, chunky walls, clear icons, menus, lettering and visual rhythm - so three players can read the fight at a glance. Tim Hubberstey, hardware engineer, turns the idea into a dependable arcade board: processors, video, sound, inputs, memory and electrical design built to run all day.

Cris Drobny, technician, lives with the prototypes: wiring, EPROMs, sockets, test rigs, monitors, tools, repairs and the last mysterious fault before field test. Brad Fuller and Don Diekneite make the cabinet speak: fanfares, cannon shots, explosions, music cues and stereo sound through arcade speakers.

Sam Comstock, Sean Murphy, Will Noble and Nick Stern add artistic support -cleanup, drawings, animation, type, polish and production art. Peter Lipson, Mike Albaugh, Rusty Dawe and Ed Rotberg provide software support: tools, libraries, fixes, reviews and veteran advice when the programmer needs another set of eyes.

Chris Downend, Commander, helps steer engineering, schedules, demonstrations and production. Linda Benzler, product manager, explains why operators should buy it: three-player competition, earnings, pricing, sales literature and show demos.

Dave Cook, cabinet designer, deals with the object: wood and metal, control-panel spacing, trackball holes, monitor angle, coin door, marquee, service access, shipping strength and factory drawings. Pat McCarthy handles ASIC work, the custom-chip logic that saves board space and makes the electronics practical.

Deborah Short, animation artist, and "The Wall Boys" get thanks for extra help. The Wall Boys were in-house players called to pound on Rampart, wreck walls, find bugs and prove the release could survive real hand.
