Qrd on Langrisser V patch created with AI? Trannylaters seem to be seething over it. Is it any good?
>>

Langrisser 2 for Genesis was best fan translated ROM IMO.

but AI bros should keep doing it. better than the morans who kept making fake translations for japanese VNs.
>>
>Langrisser

Why does every fucking fan translation have drama nowadays?
>"WOW FELLAS! LOOKIT ME! I MADE THIS SMELLY OLD GAME MY LITTLE BITCH! NOW YOU CAN PLAY IT, AND DON'T EVEN BOTHER TO COMPETE BECAUSE I'M THE BEST AND THE REPROS WILL WASTE THEIR CARTS AND DISCS ON ME AND LETSPLAYERS WILL DEFAULT TO I, ME, FOR THE REST OF LIFE, NOW BE SURE TO LIKE COMMENT SUBSCRIBE DONATE AND SHILL ME TO THE ENDSS OF THE EARTH!!"
>*turns out they grossly overrelied on machine/AI-tools to the point pretty much absolutely anyone could have 'translated' the text*
>"CURSES! WHO COULD HAVE FORESEEN THE POSSIBILITY THAT THE LOSER HARDCORE ENTHUSIASTS OF THIS ANCIENT GAME WOULD FIND OUT THAT I, ME, AM FULL OF SHITT?? NO REFUNDS! PLEASE!! CONTINUE TO SUPPORT MY AUTISM!!! YOU HAD NOTHING, AND IT IS BETTER THAN NOTHING!!!... Please... I'm ME..."
Almost every fucking time since, say, 2020. So predictable. What do we call this phenomenon?
>>
>>12638952
>nowadays
Dude this has been the case as long as there have been fan translations. It's all attention seeking and drama. Faggots will act like they OWN a game they won't make progress on for a decade.
>>
>>12638989
>Faggots will act like they OWN a game they won't make progress on for a decade.
That's the opposite problem, and it's mostly Aeon Genesis' fault for coining the 'dibs' system (which most people are sensible enough to abide by). Now it's practical children coming out of absolutely nowhere unannounced with no translation experience feeding you MTL/AI slop that they put in a game, which shows no restraint or respect. Literally what is the point when modern emulators give you on-demand mtl options that will actually improve over time? Instead of, y'know, immortalizing your idiocy in hack form that will be instantly dated.

AI retards keep doing this shit and instead of proving why their tools are as worthwhile as they claim, keep giving AI detractors more valid reasons to hate them.
You'd think that if AI tools were as good as the AI sloppers claim, they'd be happy to read through the slopped script and review it to see how accurate and well-written it is, but in this and so many other cases it's the exact opposite, where not even the AI sloppers can be bothered to engage with the slop they spew, instead shirking the responsibility of QA'ing their shit to the end users.
As seems so common in the AI slop sphere, AI sloppers want all the social credit of contributing something to a community without actually putting forth the effort of making something worth a damn.
AI has made it cheap and quick to produce something, but these retards treat that as a substitute for the care required in order to make something people actually want to engage with.
The worst and crappiest part is, if you dare to complain, they'll tell you
>"dOn'T lIkE iT!? LMAO dO iT yOu'Re SeLf ThEn!!!"
to try and frame your VALID criticism of their free work as somehow illegitimate and free of accountability, which is fucking bullshit because the community's time wasted consuming flawed, zero-QA, zero-fucks-given AI sludge is a real cost that affects hundreds, possibly thousands of people. A fuck ton more than the meager amount of time and effort it would have taken to do the job right in the first place.
>>
>>12638789
>Trannylaters seem to be seething over it
MTL has existed for more than two decades; translation is actually one of the first professions to embrace "AI" (they called it "learning machine"). Every single game you see released these days (including indies)? You can bet your ass that the vast majority of their base translations is done through MTL + human proofreading (do not necessarily confuse this with human QA), and it's been this way since long before "AI" became trendy.

This is what fan translators don't know or want you to know. The funny thing is this has always been common knowledge, but with the proliferation of AI, people have become more ""resistant"" to all forms of machine translation, despite it having been around forever.

On that note and not to necessarily endorse it, this dumb Time Extension site seems to report every project relying on it for the sake of views and engagement bait.

>Is it any good?
Dunno, didn't bother to check it.
>>
>>12639018
>dibs' system (which most people are sensible enough to abide by)
lol
i'm so glad AI triggers your kind
>>
>>12638789
how can translation be good if game is not good?
>>
>>12638789
long as it doesn't read like ESLop and isn't full of mistakes, IDGAF
>>
>>12639289
>AI retards keep doing this shit and instead of proving why their tools are as worthwhile as they claim, keep giving AI detractors more valid reasons to hate them.
If you bought games like Oath in Felghana, you paid for MTL tool assisted translations. Which at it's core, is the same thing, with extra steps.
>>
>>12639463
No one wants to start a project if someone else is over 90% done, there are so many other good things you can do on this Earth than waste time retreating only to come up with a facsimile of a translation that only serves to fool people.
This is really just swapping one problem for another. The real solution to both the "when it's done" and "AI slop artist" extremes is to just open-source your shit at github in realtime with full transparency every step of the way. But too many people are full of themselves, convinced that their methods are the correct one.

Time Extension is supremely fucking gay for posting this. I get the AI translation hate, I hate them too, but for a big publication like this to shitblast a hobbyist project that someone spent a significant amount of their free time on (even if it's AI, it still takes time to hack etc.) feels real fucking shitty.
>big publication lmao
They're owned by fucking ign.
>In 2024, Time Extension became a partner of IGN Entertainment after Gamer Network was acquired by Ziff Davis.
Yeah let's cheer on megacorpo for putting the little freelancer guy down. Fuck this.

>>12639563

>>12638789
>make AI translation
>tell people it's AI
>"IT'S SHIT"
vs
>make AI translation
>don't tell people it's AI
>"SO FAITHFUL"
why does this happen?
>>
>>12639658
Because people want their translations to have that "human touch," when in reality, the human touch was just someone butchering the language.
>>
>>12639658
It doesn't. Look at the shitstorm the Night Slave MTL patch caused.
>>
>>12639672
What happened with that?
>>
>>12639675
A guy was grifting Patreon money with PC-98 translations of questionable quality. He releases one for Night Slave. It's especially terrible. People figure out the guy doesn't know a word of Japanese and was using MTL without disclosing it. Japanese readers look back at his previous "translations" and compare them against the original scripts. It turns out they are equally shit. Everyone gets pissed at him and asks "what the fuck dude?" He goes completely radio silent and is never head from again.

>>
>>12639689
Is that the guy on gbatemp? It was fishy how he was pumping out so many of those translations so fast...damn, that sucks.
He's not the one who did the dead of the brain translations is he?
>>
>>12639693
Yeah he did Dead of the Brain. Someone else went back and gave that game a proper translation, though, so you might be thinking of that person. Night Slave was also redone properly.
>>
Just learn Japanese if AI slop triggers you. Even the lowest IQ brown mongoloids from shithole countries can do it so why can't you?
>>
>>12639705
While this is the "correct answer" it is also a non-answer that fails to solve the problem of
>people are translating things from Japanese to English
>the people translating from Japanese to English are a combination of lazy, incompetent, don't care about their work, attention-seeking, patreon-grifting, AI-dependent, and a slew of other problems that are ultimately harmful to the translation's quality and to those who consume the translated work
The moment the "first" translation of something is submitted, it becomes the default basis upon which all Western language discourse forms around it. You get one chance to make a proper first impression, and it would be better for the "scene" surrounding romhacking and translations to mature rather than what we are currently witnessing.
>>
>>12639689
Not to blame the victims, but why'd it take the weeby audience multiple games to figure this out?
>>
>>12639732
Anyone who has enough proficiency in the source language to determine if a translation is full of shit isn't going to be reading translations. Someone has to suspect something is off before they get someone to check. If you're capable of writing proper English sentences, you can fool people for a long time. How would your audience know better? Not that this makes bad translations acceptable. Quite the opposite, I'd argue. People will walk away from the experience thinking they've gotten everything a game has to offer when all they've gotten was a bastardized version of it.

With the situation being what it is nowadays, I expect everyone will be more skeptical of any new translations that come out. I feel bad for any new blood trying to enter the scene and do honest work. Without a reputation to fall back on, any newcomers are going to scrutinized relentlessly.
>>
While AI translations are extremely dubious i agree with >>12639563

Time extension is fucking gay. Literally ALL they do now is find some way to shove in muh ai in anything. Even when it's a project that doesn't involve any ai whatsoever.

But really this Ai is just a symptom of a larger problem. That being that fan translating games are stuck in the extremes of YOU CAN'T EVER TOUCH MY PROJECT vs I WILL USE AI AND YOU CAN'T STOP ME

Ideally I just follow the path of open source with strict guidelines for not just submitting any random bullshit. Ai or otherwise but too many translators have an ego.

People don't even remember the germs shitstorm anymore when the guy got blasted for mtl and using the Spanish translation as a base and the guy got demoralized so badly he took it down. Hell even the guy who did the Spanish translation didn't like how it all ended up.

Eventually fan translations will fucking die because what can you do? If you're new everyone will think you're using ai even if you prove you genuinely know Japanese. Or the same oldfags eventually quit because they're stuck translating games they don't even like and everything else they wanted to do is already done. That or they go pro.
>>
>>12639886
I don't think the hobby is in any peril. The circus is in town, but the people who silently grind out projects and release them without incident are still doing that. They just don't get as much attention as the drama sponges. I do worry about people who are new to the scene, but ultimately, quality work speaks for itself. Regarding your last point, I don't think running out of interesting games to translate will ever be a problem lol.
>>
>>12639727
Apparently there is no problem if retards are happy with AI translations. Who the fuck cares at that point, let them eat shit. You can't convince them.
The real problem is that people seem to have zero standards. Fucking hell, look at the past 15 years compared to just 5 years in the 90s in media. People nowadays watch the most vapid, mind numbingly boring shit, look at all the fucking shit demakes. This is only going to get worse, preserve your sanity because this shit is rough.
>>
>>12639018
>which most people are sensible enough to abide by).
Look, I get it makes more sense to spread the translations around. If someone is doing this, someone else should do that. But if you don't show your work and just sit on your ass at 67% for YEARS then you can go to fucking hell.
>>
>>12639903
Nta but aeon genesis is a lazy faggot but also somewhat a perfectionist which is why his work takes years even if the translation is done

Motherfucker will sit on something for years just because he couldn't figure out how to hack a single menu screen

>67 percent
Speaking of srw. Apparently he actually got off his ass and is working with a beta test release of Snes srw4. Time will tell if he actually delivers

Yeah, but what's the track record for ADD "usurpers" facing consequences for poor communication with OCD "claimers"? You'd think what should always happen is that the claimer just releases what he has in frustration, which yes is a risk for the usurper if it comes to light he is a rushjobber overestimating how finished their project is, but the scenario that seemingly plays out more often is that the claimer is the one btfo'd by the usurper.
