The older I’ve gotten, the more I’ve realist Yuji Naka is a sadist. His level design was fun, but intentionally designed around exploiting your instincts to give the worst possible outcome unless you learn where the traps are. But, by rarely killing Sonic as long as he’s holding at least one ring, the player will be less likely to quit, and keep punishing themselves longer and longer.

Yuji Naka loved tormenting kids.
