Oh shitRest in peace
A Vietnam war combat vet, later a lawyer, and after that a music composer for video games. Neat.
>>12643864>started a white soul band>went to vietnam as a 1st LT platoon leader>didn't die>passed the bar exam and became an attorney>started making music for computer nerds in the '90swhat a fucking legend, RIP
>>12643864Poor bastard had a terrible illness due to agent orange during his deployment. I hope he is at peace now. Legendary composer and a stepping stone of videogame music.
>>12643875wtf my dad died of the same thing and his name was also robert.
>>12643874That's pretty crazy. I wonder what his musical training included, if he wanted to make music from a young age or if he discovered it later in life.
>>12643864RIP to a legend
>>12643921the white soul band was a thing he was doing for around 5 years before he went to vietnam. i'd imagine he was in school music programs from a young age
Holy fuck, I wasn't expecting that and I wasn't aware how old he was. Sadly, with his death we'll never know the origin of the revenant noise.Good bye legend, F.
>>12643864His music on Doom and Duke 3D is god-tier. I don't care if some of it is a rip-off of other musicians; I probably would've never listened to the originals if it weren't for him. FMy favorite DN3D trackhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiOjQqT7D-A
>>12643864His Wolfenstein 3-D work meant a lot to me personally. Rest in peace.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMzhzRi3YZE
>>12643864Damn I was just thinking about the anecdote where John Carmack kept pushing him to make the songs sound more and more copyright infringing, RIP
>>12643864Good night sweet Prince.
>>12643864Goodnight, sweet Prince.>>12643996I'm a musician myself and there's not much I hear in there that was straight copied. He took the songs and gave them the WCW theme treatment where they sound just similar enough without actually being the same. Shit's super common in metal especially among thrash bands, which was where most of it came from.
>>12643864Rip you legend. Going to play Doom music and ALIENZ.mid today in remembrance. Oh wait I do that every day...
I liked his songs on wolf3d, blake stone and rott more than doom desu. More catchy compositions and I just find the doom midi font to be grating to listen to.
>>12643874>>12643871Made a big family, too. Accomplished man.>>12643875Wouldn't be surprised if Agent Orange played a part, even people who just handled the barrels were exposed and poisoned by it.This was because the companies which produced it for the military, like Dow Chemical and Monsanto, didn't care about manufacturing it properly, so it would always be extremely contaminated, something which could have been avoided.>>12644047>>12644014I think that a lot of it is more transformative than some are willing to give credit. Besides that, he did a lot of original tracks, not just for Doom, but other games.
Some examples of Bobby's original tracks, a few from Duke Nukem 3D, but the others are all lesser known games which nobody really played much, and none which had their soundtrack based on popular music, being Black Knight, Abuse, DemonStar, and a later indie game known as Wrack.https://files.catbox.moe/dyw9iy.zipBobby composed MIDI with a Roland Sound Canvas 55, best I know, so his music should be played back with one, or with a software which can use an .sf2 that imitates it, to get the right sound.
Rise Of The Triad credits Bobby Prince, but he did only one track on that game, the rest of it was by Lee Jackson. For Duke Nukem 3D, Bobby and Lee did half of the soundtrack each, and I think they did an excellent job. Of Bobby's compositions, I think Aliens Say Your Prayers, Gutwrencher, and Going After The Fat Commander, are really good and iconic tracks, they fit the theme and mood of the game really perfectly.Bobby did not have the same contract terms as Lee did, and his music wasn't renegotiated for when it came to the console releases of Duke Nukem 3D in the 1990s, hence why those ports simply don't have his compositions in them. Many years down the line, when Duke Nukem was in Randy Prickford's grubby hands, this was completely forgotten about, and his tracks were included in the 20th Anniversary Edition of Duke Nukem 3D without asking or renegotiating with him, thus he sues Gearbox and they settle.
This one really got me. While im kinda young, Doom was the first FPS my parents allowed me to play as a kid and I have a lot of nostalgia for it. The music left a huge impression on me.F
>>12643864MODS STICKY THIS
>>12644236WHERE'S THE STICKY MOD MAN?
>>12644236>/vr/>mods
>>12644291Maybe one day...
Keen 4 & 6, Cosmo, Wolf3D, Major Stryker, Bio Menace, Duke2 and Doom. Those were the games I grew up with his sounds. RIP Legend.>>12644236Agreed
How did this guy make a living ?
>>12644474He was a lawyer
>>12644474The way I understand it, most of his job as a musician wasn't writing music for videogames, but just being a general freelance musician. So, probably he did a whole lot of local event stuff, state fairs and what not.>>12644537He practiced law at some point, and I vaguely recall in an interview from roughly a decade back he said he was raising chickens.
Sticky nigger jannies
>>12644557He got a sticky on /v/
>>12644563After 9+ hours but yeah.
I care that he died because he made the music for Duke 3DYou care because he made music for Wolfenstein (shit) and Doom (slightly less shit) WE ARE NOT THE SAME
>>12644158>Many years down the line, when Duke Nukem was in Randy Prickford's grubby hands, this was completely forgotten about, and his tracks were included in the 20th Anniversary Edition of Duke Nukem 3D without asking or renegotiating with him, thus he sues Gearbox and they settle. This is surprising considering that the expansions weren't included precisely because of rights shenanigans. They might legit not have realized or forgot; or maybe they thought it was better to include the music and make up for it afterwards than ask for it and risk not being able to include them.People would have laughed at that release (even more) without Prince's music
>used his lawyer skills to just BARELY avoid getting sued for ripping off Slayer/Pantera/Alice In Chains etc.Legend. Rest easy Bobby.
rest in peace King
>>12643864RIP to a real music legend. This was always the definitive version for mehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ml2PEWzDoqo&list=PLccUBPYq1ACvz9eI0wygito60uQizRXzE&index=3
See you at Doom's gate, Mister Prince. Keep rocking you badass mofo.
>>12644663Those tracks were done under the condition that iD would assume any potential liabilities for it, which he allegedly expected, but which then never happened.
https://youtu.be/A3XrZvBcjiQ I really like how grandiose this one feels, but in an early experimental way for the era. It reminds me of a dire moment in a point and click adventure game. His and Lee Jacksons Duke tracks are very cinematic

>>12644432I was surprised to learn later in life how many games from my youth he had worked on.Thought it was just Duke and Doom, really.
I mean I knew he has cancer but I kept hoping he'd beat it
>>12643864The 'nam got to him.Once you're there, there ain't no turning back.
Rest in power Mr Prince>>12643979Great track
RIP>>12644042First time this has ever been used and been true.
>>12644843I mean, even if he did, he was still 81. Left a hell of a legacy though, his work was put in the fucking Library of Congress this year.

>>12643989Oh man, the memories of my childhood...RIP Mr. Prince.
Good night, sweet prince. ;_;
>>12643864So I have a question: I have some old probably obscure Midis from him that came from a shareware game he composed for called 'Black Knight'. I remember emailing him about it and never getting a reply. Should I post them here? It was a Fighter Jet game and it's the typical 90s rock.
>>12645384Definitely post them for posterity.
>>12645390Sure thing. https://files.catbox.moe/0g3pqw.zipThis comes from the game in pic related, Black Knight Marine Strike Fighter".They're in .SEM file format, which is compatible with OpenMPT. I think they're Roland Sound Canvas files but I've never encountered this extension outside of this game.AFAIK, these four files are the only soundtrack the CD version of the game has, the diskette version has more music also credited to him. The only thing I know about them is that Bobby Prince is credited with the CD and Diskette release of this game's OST, and he's credited as the author of the modtracker files in openMPT. MF is the main menu music and the others play during gameplay. The Diskette version has a soundblaster compatible soundtrack, but I've never seen the CD version's OST anywhere outside my personal copy. I tried to ask more about them several times, but he never responded to email. So I guess I'll never know the story behind them or how he got involved with Wizardworks. This game came out a year before Duke Nukem 3D, and you can hear some of the sound samples he would later go to use in that game. This comes from my copy of the game I got in the 90s from wizardworks bargain bin bundles.
>>12645384You can post them. I can then post the stuff he did for Abuse and DemonStar.I've never played those games, but the music is good, and theirs specifically fits into Doom like a glove, so they're good for custom Doom levels.
>>12645052do you have to bring that energy here?you're part of the problem.
Abuse: https://files.catbox.moe/szjrpw.zipAlso a fixed version of the victory midi: https://files.catbox.moe/d0xx86.mid(I forgot the exact reason, but I was experiencing some sort of problem with getting it to play back properly when testing it for Doom once, and this fixed that).Black Knight: https://files.catbox.moe/txp0dc.zipDemonStar: https://files.catbox.moe/3i9661.zip
>>12645384If you do I will definitely download and save them for posterity; I'm sure I won't be the only one
For a better listening experience with MIDI, I recommend using something like this:https://files.catbox.moe/szupfp.7zIt's an .SF2 which imitates the Roland SC-55, which Bobby seems to have composed around for games like Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, and Rise Of The Triad. This will sound MUCH richer and better than the default Windows soundfont which everyone has been so used to for decades. However, while most MIDI music will sound better with this, not all will, and in fact it can outright make some music sound wrong. Some composers worked with SC-55, but others would use the SC-88, or the MT-32, or one of the many Soundblaster cards. What you'll like will come down a lot to what you like best, and if you're old enough, what you used back in that era, I don't care for it myself, but for some, OPL-3 Synth is the only thing that sounds right to them. Most sourceports for Doom and games like Duke Nukem 3D will let you select .SF2s for playing back MIDI, and some music playing software will as well. Personally, I use FooBar2000 with a MIDI player extension (and also a Tracker module extension, for such music).
>>12645463See that's what I find so strange about the Black knight game, it has more Midi files than modtracker files, but the modtracker files were advertised as a special version of the game. Despite there only being four. The midi files aren't in the CD version of the game.
>>12645482I appreciate it. I put it here >>12645421 again, only four files for the CD soundtrack.
>>12644594>i'm gonna use someone's death as an excuse to post my unfunny zoomer memes and participate in sports team faggotryShould've been you.
>>12644715It really was just a case of "you could only get away with it back when the vidya industry was so small that barely anyone paid attention to it"
>>12645563Pretty much. Also, it arguably works as indirect advertising, sure did on me.

>>12645563Same with uncredited samples in old hip hop. That shit died off real fast once people started getting sued.
