What's a game you had really high expectations for that ended up being a huge disappointment?

Yoshi's Story. It's a fine game, but man was it a downgrade from Yoshi's Island

I saved up for months and couldn't have been more excited after playing WCW vs The World nonstop for the year prior. As it transpired, it was like the worst shit anyone could have ever taken, in wrestling vidya form. As i played I kept hoping that it would get better but my disappointment was finally complete when there were aliens disco dancing with the wrestlers on the screen, as if that was something that was supposed to happen in a wrestling game. I still remember the sinking feeling.

>high expectations
Deus Ex 3: Project Snowblind.

turned out to be weaker Crysis with more bugs. no updates and fanpatches ever.
>>
>>12644905
I should add that this was the last WCW game i ever played. It upset me so much I didn't move on to the N64 WCW games like everyone else, so it also cost me that.

Pokemon Stadium.

We're talking like around the time Red and Blue was first around and the Pokemon craze was starting to kick up.

One day my mom came back from work, told me that after dinner that we would go to the store to pick my birthday present so we went to the store and i made a beeline towards the N64 games section.

When i saw Pokemon Stadium, i looked at the back cover and assumed that you could pick any Pokemon and could fight and move freely on the screen(kinda like Pokken i guess).

I was so excited to come back and play the whole night with my younger brother. Man the disappointment when we played the 1st match and realized it was nothing like we thought it was.

My brother played 2 games, put down the controller and walked away. I kept playing despite not really liking the game like i expected to but i kept playing it anyways and ended up getting to the part where you battle and catch Mewtwo and lost interest afterwards.

Pokemon Stadium games were just glorified DLCs for first two gens. They were cool in their own way, but to squeeze all out of them you would need to play them after GB/GBC titles and use transfer pak to get your bros on the big screen. Functionally they were the equivalent of Battle Frontier in gen 3 and 4.
>>
>>12644887
Many retro classics ended up disappointing. I would rather list games that were surprisingly good.
>>
>>12644887
Kid Chameleon. I'm sure it was great in its time but I just can't get into it.
>>
>>12644887
The Witcher, back when it first came out it had a bunch of hubub because it was banned in Germany or something with a million made up reasons, reading forums back in the day made it sound like a fantasy GTA. Imagine my shock when I finally play it and it's just a really shitty NWN module, even Gothic was more impressive than witcher.
>>
>>12644887
Persona 3, I played 1 and 2 before it and they replaced all the good stuff for a glorified high school sim for weeb otakus with no real friends
>>
FF6 and chrono trigger

I've played FF7 and Chrono cross first and they're some of my favorite games of all times
I've kept hearing that FF6 and trigger were better and the true best J-RPG of all time so i was very hyped, when i finally played these games my disappointement was huge i didn't find the amazing world, great battle system and emotional story of FF7/Chrono cross in those games

>>12644887
It forever will always be Diablo 3 for me. Not retro but the first two were, which I naively expected the third to be just as good. It was shit. Didn't even finish it It was such a piece of garbage shit game
>>
>>12644887
I wasn't really hyped for a lot of a games back in the day, or perhaps it was more accurate to say I was hyped for every game coming out. I can't really think of any I was specifically waiting for over the rest, except for maybe entries in the Final Fantasy series. FFXII was the first time I picked one up and was disappointed by the combat mechanics in it, didn't even play for more than hour or two.

I guess Devil May Cry 2 was similar in that regard, I played 1 over and over and I blew through all of 2 in just a few hours after buying it. Didn't feel like doing the harder modes on it either.

Pokemon Gold and Silver were disappointing, but I don't really think that was a fault of the games looking back. I think it was just that pokemania was dying down at this time and less friends were playing it so it was hard to get as invested in GS as it was RBY.

Doom 3

Diablo 3 was the final straw I had with Blizzard. Cataclysm was underwhelming and simplifying WoW even further, Starcraft 2's story took a nosedive even if it was a fun game, but Diablo 3 felt like it inherited WoW's art and streamlined so much of the game that I was immediately repulsed. I was in the beta for it and never even bought the game afterwards, nor a single other Blizzard product.
>>
Resident Evil 5
it was the last time I ever pre-ordered a game too
>>
Black & White. Both of them. Molyneux managed to fool me twice, so i guess it's also my fault, as the say goes.

Did you get the rucksack and Africa necklace too? It was my first Resident Evil and I enjoyed it

It killed the series, that's for sure. Taking the be framework of 4 and changing everything that made it good, not to mention enforcing at least faux multiplayer was the worst decision capcom ever made.

You were either genuinely retarded or extremely young if you didnt realize what type of game Pokemon Stadium was before you bought it.

Zombies Revenge is easily up there in terms of games I thought would be amazing but ended up pretty shit. There is no reason to play it when Die Hard Arcade exists.

>>12645857
Okay, so genuinely retarded it is. I mean, the back of the box explains what the game is about, and the battles have HP meters. Aside from the mini game image, everything literally looks like a GB Pokemon game in 3D, and the text explains it as such. And yea, no internet for you, but game magazines were everywhere explaining what the games were about for retards such as yourself.
>>
>>12645864
Depending on your age, you weren't buying and then reading magazines either.

And even if you were, you might miss the issue that would tell you exactly what Pokemon Stadium is
>>
>>12645867
Thats why I said the options were either retarded or really young. If he was really young, it'd be understandable since kids are idiots
>>
>>12645870
You could also be so hyped up that you think "Why would Nintendo release a bad game?"

Because up to that point, I don't think Nintendo had, and then Nintendo put out the Pokemon quadroon of trash (Pokemon Stadium, Pokemon Snap, Pokémon Puzzle League and Hey You, Pikachu!)

Those kinda releases could've strangled Pokemon in the crib.
>>
>>12645857
idk what diddy blud means but why didn't you rent it first?
>>
>>12645230
I've had conversations with people about D3 at launch. They refused to believe me when I told them that basically all legendary items were completely worthless since none of them rolled with random attributes and and main stats. They'd just be an white item with some quirks. Genuinely impossible to explain other than that blizzard just ran out of money or something.
>>
Ocarina of Time is the main one. The 64 in general especially in Nintendo Power kept getting hyped and this one was the largest offender in Nintendo's PR to push 3d when the transition felt empty and lacking compared to how much of a complete experience their 2d entries were at the time.
>>
>>12645873
i love pokémon puzzle league/challenge, though i wouldn't pay N64 game prices for it, i had it on game boy colour and it makes sense there.
the n64 in general isn't much suited for smaller games since they just can't make any size cart very cheaply

>>12645559
>>12645702
no wonder the quality of posts on /vr/ got so shitty,RE5 was a garbage game trough and trough.
>>
>>12644887
chrono trigger by a wide margin but that probably has more to do with the insane amount of hype people give it. It's a perfectly fine 8/10 game but the expectations made it feel really underwhelming
>>
Breath of Fire 4. Beautiful game. Nothing fucking happens.

Ape Escape. I played the demo as a kid and was blown away.
Years later I finally got to play the full version, and the whole experience was very meh...

>>12646047
But it's ugly as hell though.
>>
>>12644887
Sneak king. I thought it was gonna be a gta clone like the true crime games when I saw the commercials. It took me over 20 years later to actually try it. The game was horrible.
>>
>>12644918
Exactly this. I still remember the "what's the matter trainer?" As I struggled to work out that you can't move the Pokémon
>>
>>12644887
There were countless movies I saw in high hopes that ended up being pure garbage.

But not one game. At the very worst they were decent.

>>12645489
RE5 was just RE4 but way better. The only reason people prefer 4 is because Leon is hot.
>>
>>12645481
Were you expecting 3 to be super fast paced like the first 2 Dooms?
>>
>>12646235
Cramped corridors, monster closets and jump scares got lame after a while. I did expect it to be a horror game because I followed news leading up to the release

Probably FFVIII, had no expectations for FFIX and so it was okay, then followed by disappointment in FFX. Cured of fanboyism, I stopped getting hyped for vidya I haven't played.
>>
>>12646272
This but my expectations were always low

Wave Race: Blue Storm was a huge disappointment. I got the original along with my N64 and played the shit out of it, so was excited to do the same with my shiny new GameCube. It was still visually impressive, but it controls like shit and I barely played it by comparison. Even now I only ever go back to Wave Race 64, which is still great. It turned out to be a real 'start as you mean to go on' moment for that turd of a console.

I spent so many hours reading the lionhead forums and daydreaming about the future of videogames
>you can plant a tree as a child and come back as an adult and pick an apple from it!
>you can buy a house, start a family, teach your children how to fight, go on adventures with them
>a random enemy you nearly killed ages ago will come back as the leader of a gang and attack you! the scar on his face is where you attacked him! >townspeople will give you nicknames depending on your behavior!
I imagine the game isn't half bad if you take it for what it is, but I made it through the tutorial in shock. I played maybe 30m after that, completely disappointed, and dropped it.

Twilight Princess. I was very much the target audience for it. OoT was my favorite game of all time, and when TWW was first revealed I recoiled and thought it looked like kiddy shit (though I still ended up getting it around release and really liking it). Then I saw the first trailer for TP and basically basedfaced, hooting and hollering in happiness. For two years, my head ran wild with expectations. I pre-ordered it around 2005, and when it was announced it would launch with the Wii first, I pre-ordered the Wii and changed my TP preorder to that version. No fucking way I was gonna wait another month or two for the GC version.

Then I finally got both the Wii and TP on midnight release, and went home to play it for about seven hours straight. I remember looking around every fucking nook and cranny, expecting to find secrets or at least neat little things or curiosities, but at least in those first few hours, the game was pretty sparse on those. The tutorial dragged, and I recall feeling pretty underwhelmed by the Forest Temple, which was nowhere near as mesmerizing as the OoT counterpart. Then I got to Hyrule Field, and I got super excited again, thinking I was now free to explore and find cool shit. Nope, I got rused, it was just a small section and there was nothing to see or do, so on to the next part.

And it kinda just kept going on like that. Sure, the game does open up more as you progress and there's quite a bit to see, but the more I played, the more I felt like it was just retreading OoT's beats. It was bigger and superficially more epic, but somehow it also felt emptier, missing something. I got damn near everything except the poes, and I beat it, and I kinda got the feeling of... that's it, then? Cool.

There's more I could say. I do like it, it's an extremely solid game, but it just couldn't live up to my hype.
>>
>>12646310
only played blue storm but from what i can gather the n64 version is easier and shallower. it "controlling like shit" is you being a shitter skill issue. gonna go back and play bs

DKC2 - just doesn't feel right compared to DKC, feels as if it becomes a lot more cartoony and 'gamey'. Music is still good though.
