does /vr/ believe that this franchise was improved by going to 3D?

I don't really care for 3d games. I like the nes ninja gaidens a lot because being able to kill enemies and projectiles in a single hit is very satisfying and a great power fantasy. the master system game is pretty fun too

nope. hated ninja gaiden black. the combat is good but there's not enough of it. give me a series of rooms like pn03. dont give me empty calorie platforming and swimming sections and puzzles that do nothing except pad the length of the game.

xbox ninja gaiden was an incredible game but so different than the 2d games that they barely feel connected gameplay wise. i never played any of the 3d games after black but none of them seemed to have the staying power of black.

fair criticism. the swimming level really should not have been in the game.

I mean it is a case of same name, different game. The people who wanted a quality 3D Ninja action game were probably happy, the ones hoping for sequel that took what the originals did and made them look / play better were probably disappointed. 2D Retro Ninja Gaiden pretty much ended on the NES and if fans wanted 16bit Ninja action, they had to switch gears to Shinobi or other such series.
Ninja Gaiden Ragebound looks good. I am not a big fan of the NES originals so I don't know how it holds up as a successor but gameplay looks fun and despite being made by the Blasphemous guys, they kept it stage based and didn't turn it into a Metroidvania like that Shinobi revival. I'll probably pick it up next time it goes on sale.

Ninja Gaiden wasn't even improved by becoming a platformer.

kinda disappointed by the total lack of platforming desu

they're really just entirely different games, they share an aesthetic premise, that's it. like comparing contra to duke 3d. the spatial component of side scrolling action games doesn't really translate to 3d. it's becomes about area avoidance and iframes.

This. I never got on board the 3d bandwagon in the mid 90s and I still haven't. I barely played the Xbox Ninja Gaiden but from what I played it seemed fine. I would still rather play any of the NES titles.

Ironically, Ragebound plays more like a "classic" console Shinobi than any 2D ninja gaiden game. It even has auto scrollers that are similar to those from Shinobi III.

They're pretty different, it's more accurate to say the games got reimagined in 3D rather than adapated unless you're looking at the arcade NG. But they absolutely had a good jump to 3D that got squandered by (Koei) Tecmo being one of the worst companies out there
