>DESIGN IS LAW>Actually fuck that we need a shiny new graphics engineWas Romero retarded?
Romero's work was strongly associated with technological innovation in a time where it was happening at a rapid pace. While that's mainly due to Carmack it was still shoes he was likely expected to fill with his own projects.t. 97fag who wasn't there
>>12645876He was still relying on Carmacks tech, so the technological arms race doesn't make sense. Just make Daikatana and if you want a more advanced Daikatana, make a fucking sequel.
>>12645848Didn't he get fired because he spent all his time playing Quake deathmatches instead of actually doing any work?
>>12645848According to the book "Masters of Doom," it was when he saw the lighting effects in Quake 2 that he decided they needed to upgrade to that engine. The way light traveled with the lasers from your laser pistol specifically wowed him. In his defense, Quake 2 would end up being used to show off raytracing tech as of just a few years ago.
>>12645897I think it was Doom deathmatches not Quake, Quake was the game they were in the middle of making when he was fired.
>>12645908Romero was the one who uploaded Q1 to servers on the night of the release. He left straight after.
>>12645848Swapping engines wasn't really what fucked over Daikatana, it was just too difficult for normies to enjoy and the journalists couldn't even beat the first level. >first level is full of tiny enemies that are hard to shoot>saving your game is a limited resource you have to find, no checkpoints>your AI team mates can die and if one of them does it's Game Over
>>12645958>Swapping engines wasn't really what fucked over DaikatanaYou mean the engine they couldn't 1:1 directly port over things from Quake 1 into Quake 2 and the original programmer quit? You also forgot the softlocks and crashes which 1.0 is full of
>Deus ExAll sins forgiven.
Somewhat unrelated, but how easy is it to make games/mods with the Quake 2 engine?
>>12645848It wasn't even well designed due to shit like in>>12645958
>>12645876Yeah, it was more that Carmack would figure out how to do cool things Romero came up with. Then Romero got to the age where people stopped having cool ideas(like 30 something) and then there was no one around to bring it to life anyways. If vibecoding was possible in Romero's prime we could have seen some of the coolest jank ever produced.
