It didn't die, luckily.

this game has better controls than 95% of other 5th/6th gen 3D platformers

This is the same reason 99% of retro FPSs have aged like utter shit. People only played them because they had nice graphics and then moved on to the next one with better graphics every few years. They're not actually fun to control or play. Very few first-person games are. They're just glorified tech demos same as Jumping Flash, which is why it's also forgotten.

1st person can be immersive in RPG's but I don't think the tradeoff is worth it overall. It's just not how you see the world from behind your own eyes, which is what it's trying to recreate. 3rd person offers a much more natural feeling of control, sure you don't see your own body from above but I think it's a good way of making up for all the senses and the complexity of your real life abilities to navigate in the world that you otherwise don't have in games.

Jumping Flash isn't forgotten, its remembered fondly by people who played them, and detested by people who weren't born when they came out. In this industry its a blessing they haven't been brought back and modernized.

Now there's an idea for our resident remake developers Nightdive Studios.

Who did 1st person platforming better?

I know you're being a little shit, but there's actually a pretty good Doom mod adapting it which is worth checking out.

JF 1+2 are the only good FPS ever made.

Jumping Flash was great and the first person view works. The tank controls and automated looking down mechanic when double jumping are still novel for a first person mech platformer. It achieves a sense of "driving" a machine as opposed to just moving any direction you want instantly.

What makes the game though is the clear passion and love the devs put into the worlds. Each level is just full of movement and life and funny little things.

biggest problem with the game is that it's really hard to be both a first person platformer and a light shooter. The controls work great for platforming, but make it really hard to aim and shoot without lockon or more control of where you're looking. A problem that has never been solved as noone else has tried to iterate on this genre.
