I know why they do it, but I still hate it. What's wrong with having mostly "good" levels in your game that make people smile?
>>12647172Pretty much how I feel about Banjo Kazooie>mumbo's mountain: great>treasure trove cove: perfect>rest of the game: miserable dogshit covered in various degrees of muck, gunge, slime, and sludge
You know, this is actually the main reason DKC 2 is my least favorite of the DKC trilogy. After the Pirate Ship world which actually has some sunshine, it is doom and gloom all the way through. I think the only time you see the sun after that is peaking through brambles. I still love the game for everything else but it is a bit depressing. Also looking up this map, never realized how close DK Island was, they really did just cross the damn street.
Is this just a mario thread or something? Because I fucking love dungeons. A good undead crypt to crawl through with the weight of a mountain pressing on the low, claustrophobic ceiling and the tapering light at the end of the passage.
>>12647172Cave, spooky forest, and volcano levels are almost always GOATed though?>>12647195Is this just a seasonal affective disorder thread?
>>12647196I don't mind that in open world games like Dragons Dogma where it's a side diversion and then you're free and the sun is out and you can just breath again. Level based/more linear open worlds can lead to a feeling of being trapped in some dingy dark shithole that's just depressing to play in.
>>12647192Jak and Daxter is like this too.>Seaside cliffs>Beach>Seaside village>Every other zone is raining, or overcast or in a cave of some sort all the way until the end of the game
>>12647172>why am i the cancer the killed /vr/?>hey siri what's a zoomer
Maybe it's a form of resentment on the devs end. They don't like having to market their game as "kid friendly" so they trick you and put up a face of a happy go lucky vibe but then fill the rest of the game with their more serious dark vibe they're dying to shove in your face to show you how sophisticated and adult they are. I think a lot of adults become poisoned by the idea that you can't enjoy bright colours and sincere joy as an adult, everything has to be a subversion or ironic in some way.
>>12647172That's not how entertainment works
>>12647172
>>12647240>That's not how entertainment worksWhy not?
>>12647172i despise snow/winter levels in games. not sure why because i love the snow IRL. but in game i just can't
>>12647196Mario games have a lot of underground, castle/fortress/ghost house levels
>>12647237Or maybe they are just trying to make spooky and intense levels that make you feel like you are exploring dangerous territory.
>>12647318You can't have the audience at a 10 for the entire middle 80% of the game though. You gotta edge them, ease off between the anxiety levels and let their system settle down before you hit them with the spooky and creepy shit again. What usually happens is: bright happy intro, dreary and depressing middle, bright happy ending. There should be more in the middle to break up the drudgery and misery.
>>12647172>has none of either of that>still a good game
>>12647172Right is no worse than left
Spooky manors are usually one of the best levels though
>>12647172>spooky forestKinoIs there any good games that just have halloween themed levels?
>>12647256im the opposite. snow is annoying in real life but snow levels are my favorite.
>>12647256This guy lives in a flat.>>12647558This guy lives in a house.
>>12647172Sewers and caves fucking SUCK. There has never been a fun sewer or cave area in any game. Forests and swamps are kino though.
>>12647614>Sewers and caves fucking SUCK. There has never been a fun sewer or cave area in any game. You have never played a dungeon crawler
Is this like the video game version of that thing where zoomers hate movies/books with immoral/amoral protagonists
>>12647172swamps and volcanoes make me happy
>>12647559This kid lives in his parent basement
>>12647172Anon, where do ice levels stand on your chart? *starts floating in the air with his eyes glowing red and spheres of dark energy resonating from his palms* Choose your next words carefully.
Any 3D environment that makes it hard for me to anticipate a potential attack / game over is a nope for me. So: no dark spaces, no huge pits / chasms, no deep water, no open skies, and no outer space
>>12647876Not OP, but my enjoyment of an ice level is inversely proportional to the amount of slidey surfaces said level contains. Snow levels are pretty much always awesome, though.
>>12647172>ruins>crumbled remains of a once thriving civilization, long since forgotten>happy
>>12647172Lava zones are cool
>>12647172>BoatBoat needs more context. Like a slow rolling steamboat on calm waters
>>12647172Do you make a frowny face when you get to a lava level? Are you a gay child?
>>12647172What's the problem with those levels?>>12647348This game is so cool, but the difficulty makes me cry.>>12647559Having grown up in a flat but now living in a house, I can confirm that living in a house has made me fucking hate snow like I never thought I would as a kid.Don't mind it in games though, because then I don't have to actually deal with the fucking stuff.
>>12647918It's comfy.
>>12647976>Do you make a frowny face when you get to a lava level?Yes.>Are you a gay child?I'm a HUGE manchild.
>>12647172what the fuck is wrong with you, the ones on the left are boring and the ones on the right are awesome
>>12647172Where do you rank dream/escher levels
>>12647552
>>12648525I like the one in Chrono Cross a lot.
>>12647192BK is one of the few games that does 'grungy' industrial levels really well though. Rare are shockingly good at this in general.
>>12647172Ya'll people hate mario sunshine for various reasons but it has mostly smiley face levels and that's one of the reasons I like it so much.
>>12648589Agreed. Yes, Sunshine is tedious if you’re the type who feels compelled to get 100% completion, but otherwise it’s a very enjoyable summertime play.
>>12648580>'grungy' industrial levelsThat would be their Britishness coming through.
>>12648405>I'm a HUGE manchild.
>>12647559>This guy lives in a flat.i own a house and 2 snowmobiles. what a weird thing to assume.
>>12648580>'grungy' industrial levelswouldn't exactly call it grungy but oil ocean exudes industrialness. and look at that fucking sun, you can feel the heat radiating off it
>>12647172>Spooky forestThis is some zoomer alpha related shit. Gen X loved spooky shit because of all the 80's slasher movies, millennials owned the aesthetic with le sp00ky skeletons and pumpkin spice season. Only zoomers and alphas could hate this because they didn't have proper Halloween in their childhood.
>>12647552""""good"""" might be a stretch, but it's playable
>>12649526Rather, their scary things are not monsters and ghouls, but empty rooms and other people's feelings.
>>12647172My favorite level
>>12647172spooky forest is hella kino
>>12648525Based. Abstract/metaphysical/non-Euclidian/etc levels are awesome when they're not just an excuse to do lost woods misdirection shit.
>>12649526Millennial here, I do in fact love Halloween and skeletons. And also, I need to go out and replant my pumpkins in the garden, the seeds have sprouted and they need more space (and sunshine and rain).
