Weebs will constantly say Sakura Wars was a big deal and hugely popular in Japan, but why does no one say that about Donkey Kong 64 which sold more than any Sakura Wars by hundreds of thousands there (1.1m sold in Japan)? In fact, they will call only N64 a failure when talking about it.

I think it’s because the whole Sakura Wars craze is a genuinely interesting story.

Basically, no-one saw it coming, even with everything Sega & RED Company put into it. They had to scramble to get merch and tie-in material out the door to accommodate demand.

It was so popular, they could even make CDs of the VAs performing in-universe plays and productions, and had themed cafes and stage productions that lasted years after the games were released.

It was quickly more of an IP than a game, which hit a sweet spot in the Japanese market. Demand and anticipation for the second game even helped the Saturn survive the arrival of FF7, which would have crushed it otherwise.

I think the appeal is that the setting and characters are very well realised, and the scripts are some of the best of that gen. The interactive elements of the game make you feel more invested, and the scope of the experience is more in keeping with FF7 and MGS.

I think it still garners attention because there are a lot of people who are still discovering that the Saturn was actually successful in Japan. Sega accidentally creating a monster IP is also a very Sega thing to do.

Because that game fucking sucks no matter how many copies it sold in any region. Marketing and DK Rap carries it hard, game is an absolute abortion hated by anyone who actually was tricked into buying it who isn't a total sunken-cost-fallacy sheep.

Depends who you ask. In the Japanese Saturn mags of the period, from fan feedback, it was generally;

Sakura > Loli / Beauty Spot > Bathrobe / Meganekko > Karate (who barely registers, unfortunately)

Personally, it's,

Bathrobe (Maria) > Spot (Sumire) > Meganekko (Koran) > Karate (Kanna) > Sakura (Sakura)

Sakura's weird, in that she doesn't actually do much in the game, or have that much dialogue - she's more or less automatically your love interest at the start, and the rest of the game is geared towards vibing you away from her.

Maria's based - she's your ice-cold second in command with a seemingly limitless sketchy past, who owns a gun and no pyjamas. I also liked the detail that she had your job before you arrived, and was really, really bad at it - everyone else is too polite / scared of her to ever bring it up.

Yeah - even individually, each game has a deliberate 'sad that it's all over' vibe. You can tell everyone involved loved making them, especially the VAs - the fact that the stage plays carried on for so long is pretty melancholic in itself.

It's ridiculously easy. It's obviously pitched at an audience who didn't want to get too stuck to progress with the story (the Columns games have a mechanic that proves that), but it's still hopelessly easy.

Take a look at the screenshots and pics for a minute, does this series look like something you'd play for epic fights with mechas instead of the interactions with the girls?
I played the first 2 translated games, enjoyed them and i still consider the battles aren't the selling point at all. I actually wished i can skip all battles even (those usually snorefest) and play it as purely VN
