I've decided to do a marathon of 90s/00s survivor horror, especially focusing on early RE clones. What are the best ones?

Seems like Dino Crisis and Parasite Eve are well-regarded, but I really want to enjoy picrel even though I know it wasn't as well-received. Is picreal any good? What about Evil Dead: Hail to the King (I remember that one being absurdly difficult to the point where I couldn't enjoy it)? What are the other essentials? Are the non-horror RE clones worthwhile? Is OverBlood even an RE clone at all?

The E key is right by the R key. You're still a YouTube-brained zoomer faggot who keeps up with the latest YouTube zoomer faggot trends.

Also, Countdown Vampirrs is kinda mediocrr so far. Way morr rnrmies than ammo, and the controls and rnrmy placrmrnts arr clunky rnough to makr dodging thrm annoying.
>>
>>12647795
Vampire Countdown is nothing like RE
>>
Parasite Eve 1 is much more of an action RPG. 2 incorporates some more survival horror elements, but I wouldn't refer to either of them as Resi clones.
>>
>>12647904
I mean, sure, all they copied were the inventory system, enemy design, combat, and third-person view with fixed camera angles, and when it came out, every magazine that reviewed it noted that it was a shameless RE clone, but when you think about it through a contrarian /vr/ lens, they're actually completely different with no similarities whatsoever.
>>12647906
Still worth playing, though, right? Should I read a translation of the novel first?
>>
>>12647795

>>12647795
been there, done that and I can tell you there just arent any great ones outside of the same few known clones like Parasite Eve 2, Dino Crisis and Silent Hill. There are a few okayish ones like Countdown Vampires, Deep Fear and AitD4 and thats about it. Overblood is good too, hard to call it a RE clone despite its heavy similarities because it was developed at the same time as RE1.

You will NOT find hidden gems in this genre.

>Countdown Vampires
I'll get around to it. It's too frustrating for me right now thanks to the complete lack of ammo anywhere and the huge number of enemies (plus they'll get back up if you don't use the white water immediately, which is next to impossible considering the X button doesn't register half the time and there are three other zombie vampires eating you by the time you have a second chance).
>Overblood is good too, hard to call it a RE clone
This is what I settled on (along with my simultaneous first Jill playthrough on RE True Director's Cut). Do we have any evidence of when exactly it went into production? It was released a solid six months after RE1, so there was plenty of time for it to be consciously influenced by it (game magazines of the time seemed to think so). I wouldn't call it a 1:1 clone, either, but I'd bet anything the devs were playing RE1 during its production.
>Deep Fear
This also looks good. Too bad it's Saturn-only and won't play on my PSP, but maybe I'll load it up on a different machine for my little marathon.
>>12648028
Isn't that more of an RE4 clone? It's on my list, but I want to do the PS1-era games first. Was lucky enough to snatch it before it got delisted on Steam.
>>12648081
I haven't played the BW games, but I remember Nocturne being an absolute blast, although I never did finish it. Thanks for reminding me. Those games are going on the list for sure.
>>12648089
I asked Google AI, and it gave me a good list but also omitted a bunch of games I knew should've been on it.
>>
>>12647795
it's not horror but T.R.A.G. is a fun game that's kind of like RE.

Sorry, I mixed up your OP with this game. I don't actually know anything about Countdown Vampires. I'll take your word for it.
>>
>>12647906
I agree with your take on 1, but 2 leaned super heavily into its RE roots. I'd go as far as to say it's the best RE from that generation.
>>
>>12649426
>Isn't that more of an RE4 clone?
Cold Fear is very much in line with RE4, though nowhere near as good.

Pic related was my first thought but it might get a pass since it's from the save developer (Capcom).

My other choice would be the Parasite Eve games from Squaresoft.

as >>12648078 said, a lot of RE clones from back in the day, at least on the PS1/5th gen consoles, were pretty mediocre to bad. there are more modern indie survival horror games capturing the PS1 vibe that are enjoyable than actual PS1 survival horror games.

aside from the aforementioned Dino Crisis and Parasite Eve, these ones are decent imo:
Silent Hill ofc
TRAG (not horror)
Covert Ops Nuclear Dawn (not horror)
Vampire Hunter D
Koudelka (the actual combat is a turn based rpg)
Devilman (Japanese only)
Soul of the Samurai
Fear Effect (not full on horror)

and then stuff on other consoles:
Alone in the Dark (PC)
Doctor Hauzer (3DO)
Nocturne (PC)
Carrier (Dreamcast)
Nanatsu no Hikan: Senritsu no Bishou (Dreamcast, Japan only but there is an eng fan translation)
Alone in the Dark The New Nightmare (PS2)
Clock Tower 3 (PS2)
Haunting Ground (PS2)
Death By Degrees Nina Williams (PS2, not horror and a Tekken spinoff but plays surprisingly like an RE game outside of the combat)
Eternal Darkness (Gamecube)

i could go on adding things like Fatal Frame and Siren and such that i presume you know about already and those are all great survival horror games too but i think they mess with the formula compared to true Resident Evil clones

obviously not /vr/ technically but if you want me to spew a shitload of modern indie survival horror RE-clone games that are worth a play, i can post a list of those too
>>
>>12647795
PS1: Horror: Clock Tower, Chaos Break, Galerians, Parasite Eve 2, Res Evil 1-3, Silent Hill, TRAG,

Also check out the snes clocktower. Then there's all those ps2 games but I still need to Make a list for those.
>>
dreamcast:
Horror: Alone in the Dark New Nightmare, Blue Stinger [NTSCJ], Carrier, D2, Illbleed, Resident Evil 2/3/CVX, Seven Mansions,
>>
Chaos Break is one nobody seems to know exists but it's actually quite decent.
>>
>>12647795
>>12647840
This guy already made pretty good videos about various RE clones

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tEtCEVJt6o
>>
>>12647795
Parasite Eve is most definitely not a RE clone, aside from that I would recommend Silent Hill, Alone in the Dark, Clock Tower, less notable games like Martian Gothic, Blue Stinger, or Deep Blue are all OK options. Ones I haven't tried such as the X Files game or Fatal Frame might be good I dunno.
Later titles like Extermination, The Thing, Cold Fear are all good but less unique than the 90's games.
One I'll give a brief mention because of the OP is Vampire Hunter D, it's a weird game, more like a proto-Devil May Cry definitely plays like a survival horror game but has a plenty of style and plays fine once you get used to it.
>>
>>12650626
>but if you want me to spew a shitload of modern indie survival horror
Please do. The ones I'm aware of:

>Tormented Souls
Looks cool, haven't played it for more than a few minutes, but it seems like a very direct classic RE clone.
>Crow Country
Looks cool, haven't played it. Looks like a classic RE clone.
>Pathogen X
Just okay. Short enough to be worth it. More of a clone of modern RE titles.
>Eternal Evil
Also more of a clone of modern RE titles, but has a lot of classic RE-type elements as well. It's just okay, not great.
>My Friendly Neighborhood
Like if RE7/8 was for kids. Not nearly as good as RE7/8, but very good at any rate.
>Nightmare of Decay
Looks cool, haven't played.
>Night at the Gates of Hell
Might be my favorite game of all time. Some sequences take inspiration from classic RE, although it isn't a clone.
>Daymare series
Lot of fun, more of a REMake/RE2 Remake clone.
>Fobia - St. Dinfna Hotel
Looks like an RE clone; not really sure.
>Them and Us
Looks like a textbook RE clone.
>Y. Village
Not sure if this is an RE clone or a Silent Hill clone. Looks like it could be both or neither.
>>
>>12649689
Oh, that actually looks really cool. Damn, I wish I could read runes.
>>12650854
Blue Stinger looks cool. I already have Vampire Hunter D (and all of the other PSX games you mentioned) loaded on my PSP.
>Deep Blue
Did you mean Deep Fear? I can't find Deep Blue.
>>
>>12651127
>Did you mean Deep Fear?
Yes, the Saturn game. My bad dog, that and Deep Blue Sea both occupy the same place in my head.
Sounds like you got the majority of known survival horror titles, soon you'll be scrapping moby games for obscure ass horror games that only sold 3000 copies in bratislavia.
>>
>>12650916
Yeah, a lot of the ones you've said look cool are indeed quite good. I personally didn't like Fobia all that much, it was servicable, and Them & Us is an alright, if mediocre experience, but if you got it cheap on sale and were in the mood for an RE-clone it would hit the spot.

For other ones that have released:
>Alisa
Great RE1 OG vibes from this one
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1335530/Alisa/

>Heavens Dust 2
I always try to sing Heaven Dust 2's praises when the topic of modern indie survival horror comes up, this game is a very charming isometric chibi-esque Resident Evil style experience. its certainly not gonna scare you cuz just look at it, but it's a satisfying survival horror game imo. the first game is also there, much more lackluster and feels like a borderline mobile game, but 2 is a great step up
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1515900/Heaven_Dust_2/

>Ground Zero
One of the cooler looking games/settings imo in cyberpunk-ish South Korea taken over by fleshy mutations
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2340130/Ground_Zero/

>Signalis
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1262350/SIGNALIS/

>Conscript
top down WWI survival horror made by a /v/ user iirc
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1286990/CONSCRIPT_Directors_Cut/

>Echoes of the Living
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2173460/Echoes_of_the_Living/

>Evil Tonight
charming RPG-maker esque survival horror
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1480830/Evil_Tonight/

>Flesh Made Fear
https://store.steampowered.com/app/3316350/Flesh_Made_Fear/

>Gloomwood
Sorta like classic RE mixed with Thief
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1150760/Gloomwood/

>Heartworm
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1257030/Heartworm/

>Kwaidan Azuma Manor Story
feels very PS2 Japanese horror a la Fatal Frame and Kuon
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1066430/Kwaidan_Azuma_manor_story/

Eh Fobia is just another first person walk around spooky building and sometimes pew pew a monster game that does nothing to be interesting in any real way. Sexy statues though.

>Them and Us
Is straight up what if RE1 but on 1/2 the budget. It is good but you need to roll with its quirks.

I can vouch for Ground Zero.

Parasite Eve 1 isn't a horror game but Parasite Eve 2 absolutely is. You should still play PE1 for the story so you can appreciate PE2 more, and god PE2 is my favourite survival horror game.

Well when I played it I found it underwhelming and to a point is a temu version of evil within without anything interesting.

>>12651875
the Ebola games are asset flip jank shite that are often better experienced watching someone like Aris play them, but i earnestly enjoyed Ebola Village as an alright 5-light 6/10 experience when i was going in with 2/10 expectations. i feel like if you didn't mind something like Eternal Evil then it's okay (again, wait for a sale)

>>12651320
another one i forgot to mention for the mid tier is The Mute House
>>
>>12652352
Mute house would be better if the boss fights weren't so blatantly untested beyond the dev beating it once and calling it good. The forced black bars also anger me.

I didn't, but I'm surprised they're getting away with selling that for $30 to mostly positive reviews. The atmosphere is fun, but it's the jankiest thing I've ever played in my life. I definitely wouldn't pay $30 for it.
