>ruin your experience emulating N64 with normal dualshock like controllers no matter how smoothly the games runStupid retarded looking controller still being a nuisance beyond the grave.
Use a Saturn 3D controller and it's perfectly fine
>>12648785I kept the controller when I sold my N64 and bought a USB adapter. It works perfectly in RetroArch but I never use it because there aren't any games worth playing besides Super Mario 64, which I've already played to death.
I use one of these with an adapter, but I still had to switch to a "real" controller with a "real" analog when the platforming in a game like DK64 got too retarded. It's crazy how unnecessarily harder games are with this analog, easily the worst part of the controller.
>>12648785Treasure games play like absolute dogshit, need a 64 or Saturn as stated in this thread
I bought the 8bitdo n64 controller because of that. I don't really like the button mapping but it works alright once it's set up.
>>12648851Sin & Punishment plays great on modern controllers with proper bindings. t. 1CC'ed it last year on my MiSTer and had a blast
>>12648845When they're in new condition they feel great
>>12648862>modern controllerYou didn't beat the game let alone 1cc the game.
>>12648785works on my machine
>>12648785The official nintendo switch online controller is pretty great.
>>12648862what mappings did you use, to which controller?
>>12648845Just saying, you might have better results if you adjust the analog sensitivity, assuming your chosen emus let you. I haven't had a single controller that had good analog stick sensitivity settings out of the box in emulators.
>>12648952Not really sure, it's been a while. D-pad or left stick move, right stick aim, all in-game timing actions shoulder be mapped to shoulders/triggers, melee should either be turbo'd or a button you can mash easily (such as a shoulder) Manual/auto button doesn't matter as you always use manual>>12648874Whatever helps you cope. Not one save state or rewind used ever. Any PC game in existence allows any controller/rebinding, oh well.
>>12648785It really is weird how innovative the N64 controller was with the Analog Stick, but for some reason Nintendo failed to grasp the necessity for having two sticks in order for one to adjust the camera. Yeah the C buttons don't really cut it. It sorta worked. Kinda. But Nintendo themselves knew they fucked up, which is why they did better with the Gamecube controller design. In my opinion the Gamecube controller is probably the most optimum controller ever created. It took everything wrong with the N64 controller, perfected it, and to this day nothing has managed to reach a higher bar than that. The greatest thing about the Gamecube controller is that it doesn't give a flying fuck about symmetry. Every other modern controller with the dual sticks tried to be autistically symmetrical in the layout, but the GC controller just didn't care, and that's why it was so good. But unfortunately the Gamecube's sales were weak and so Nintendo backed off from the GC controller design thereafter, but there was absolutely nothing wrong with it.
>>12648785what if instead of being like_ _ C_ C _ CB _ CAIt was more like _ C _C _ C_ C _ A_ _ Bso then you could play your n64 games like Zelda without getting in the way of the second analog stick or compromising on modern games?
>>12649228the dpad and the zbutton were big issues. no reason to have your right stick be a cuck stick either
>>12648785you can use a hori fighter commander or something similar and problem solved.also this >>12648879you can build your own with a raspico and https://github.com/joypad-ai/joypad-os
>>12648960I don't think it's the calibration, it's the general physical build of it. The hard plastic, that it sticks out too tall, the notches around it, it's all awful. And mine is as springy as one could hope from an original one in 2026.I find myself transported to my childhood in all the wrong ways with this stick, putting my shirt over it to get a better grip, using the "clawgrip" for better precision, getting blisters on my thumb...
>>12648879remember the adaptoid? remember how the site claimed the n64 controller was "the best controller ever made"? what goofy times lol
>>12649228>for some reason Nintendo failed to grasp the necessity for having two sticks in order for one to adjust the cameraYou have 30 years of hindsight. It took until the ps2 era for devs, or anyone to finally understand what the 2nd stick could be good for, even early ps2 games fail to do anything with it.
>>12648785Stay mad
>>12648785of all the nonsensical nintendo hate that I read this is got to be up there, which is saying something.
I use the bliss-box adapter so that I can change form real range to simulated range, and map how I like to. The controller is an odd ball so I use it where its needed, but the adapter lets me use any type of controller. Sometimes I can use the GC in its place this way.
>>12648785I map the right analog stick as the c-buttons. Works for me.
>>12649274Based and Marina-pilled
>>12649274The part where yoy have to pull down his tail is hard unless you remap the buttons, since you need to mash down C and if it's mapped to analog it is a pita to do that with the stick
>>12649768Thats probably because it was designed to be a button and not a stick, and most design choices on the system were made to work with the controller instead of against like people who try to use twin stick controllers. Just get a USB adapter and a proper controller or even one of those chink shit usb ones and most N64 games play much better.
>>12649252yeah, stuff like that one aliens fps game on the fps were basically just seen as flukes or weird at the time. it wasnt till around when halo came out that it started being accepted as the correct control scheme, although imo its not due solely to halo
>>12649768>The part where yoy have to pull down his tail is hard unless you remap the buttons, since you need to mash down CYou have all of those shake moves on the d-pad and the game on multiple occasions penalizes you for mashing C button instead of using the d-pad like a normal human.
>>12649694Still sucks for a lot of games that don't use them for just the camera
>>12648785It's unironically more comfortable to map the C buttons to the face buttons and A/B to shoulder buttons or paddles.
>>12648785>no matter how smoothly the games run>implying N64 emulation runs smoothly >implying N64 ever ran smoothly in the first place
>>12649212>Whatever helps you cope. Not one save state or rewind used ever. Any PC game in existence allows any controller/rebinding, oh well.Aaaand nailed it. I used a gameshark but I'm not gonna let anyone tell me I didn't beat the game.
>>12648862It works with modern controls on an N64 pad too?I really don't get why in 2026 people still don't understand how to use it
>>12650171Better pic for specific games
i boughted a raphnet adapter, they just came back in stock
>>12648785Just buy this and stop being gay.
>>12650312that things sucks. the analog sticks agressively round everything to cardinal directions. unusable for 3d games.
it's a pain in the ass but I find it's fairly rare for the c buttons to be used in an active directional way that they can't be separated out to r3, l3, fourth shoulder button, or mapped to the right stick.
>>12649783I think it's a bit odd that developers didn't clue the connection between right handed mouse use and a right analog stick sooner. quake came out in 96, wasd + mouse was the default in that game. 5 year gap and even after halo devs lagged adopting it.
>>12648785Nintendo has you covered.
>>12649228>>12649252>>12650484>>12649783Go play any FPS on N64 with one hand on DPAD and the other on the analog stickThis shit was already sorted but there were too many retards who didn’t know how to hold the controller that still complain about it to this dayTurok already had this shit down in a modern control scheme
>>12650498You'd think they'd be able to realize that the left middle grip meant the trigger was perfect for your right index finger, but the N64 controller continues to be the eternal IQ test.
>>12650398Your shift key broken?
>>12650531You’d thinkBut here we are, endless whining about shit that already existed on the console
>>12648785Steam Controller (1 or 2, or Deck) (anything with 2 back buttons and 4 face buttons)C buttons on corresponding ABXYA and B on back buttonsIt's the only substitute that works otherwise you gotta get a Bluetooth controller recreation of the N64
>>12648785pick two buttons to map to triggers/bumpers.problem solved.
>>12651287A and B are much more important than the C buttons
>>12651342What your walnut sized brain doesn't understand is that the back buttons are more prime of real estate than even the face buttons and that the most important thing with adapting the C buttons is retaining the orientation. Face buttons to C buttons works when you have 2 back buttons, and it's the only acceptable solution besides just having some solution to use an N64/Saturn 3D pad on PC like a Bluetooth recreation or adapter
>>12648785Saitek has got you covered m8.Saitek P880, P2500, P2600, maybe more models out there.
>>12651390>he only acceptable solution is just using an N64 pad on PC with an adapter
They make n64 controllers that can plug into a computer.
>>12648807Man, I'm glad people like this don't actually exist.
>>12653258Even Nintendo has problems adapting that shit C buttons
>>12653258>That A/B layoutThe original layout is way more comfortable. I don't know why it wasn't the standard to begin with. It's one of the few things the N64 controller got right.
>>12648785The C-buttons is only half of the issue. The N64 pad's analogue stick has a really high pivot compared to most other modern and contemporary analogue sticks, so the calibration is often way-off and not accounted for when using any modern controller.Super Mario 64 is a prime example of that, there's a number of sections where you're expected to tip-toe, maybe for narrow walk-ways, and this is harder to do on modern sticks where minute tilts are harder to perform.
>>12653678>The N64 pad's analogue stick has a really high pivot compared to most other modern and contemporary analogue sticks, so the calibration is often way-offJust get some of these bad boys. I've heard they work great.
