The should have made it so her knife would dull every 10 slashes or so and the player would have to go sharpen it on a whetstone 20 screens away.

The ammo crafting system is extremely overpowered once you fully understand how it works
You can literally do runs where you only use a single weapon and still end up with shittons of ammo for it
I did a run where I exclusively used the magnum as soon as I got it, and I ended up with 98 magnum rounds at the end of the game

I remember reading the novelization of resident evil 1 and the puzzle where you have to shove the statues over the vents or they spray lethal gas, Jill just smashes the glass the key is in, grabs it and leaves.

All damage values vs an enemy in RE 1/2/3 (and Devil May Cry 1 and possibly CV) are hardcoded, and the knife does 3 damage to zombies in 2 (handgun does around 11). Not sure if it was a bug or an over-zealous nerf since the knife was almost as strong as the gun in RE1, but yes the damage value is extremely low.
