Was it that bad?
>>12649306The story and characters are great, and it's the first Elder Scrolls game to have its own distinct flavor. No RPG mechanics though. The combat is a nightmare and you HAVE to master it to progress. No optional content either, so you're missing nothing by just watching a longplay.
Todd Howard’s directorial debut
Some of the aspects of it feel like a teaser of what was to come for Morrowind.
>software rendering Game looks like pixelated shit and runs like shit>enable 3dfxGame looks like broken shit and runs like shit
>>12650887I don't get why people play an old dos game only to complain about how it looks pixelated.
>>12650912It was released at the end of '98, dude. It's contemporaneous with quake 2, half-life, unreal. It's not an 'old dos game'. It's like how south americans kept making ps2 games.
The only good thing about this game has nothing to do with the game itself. They hired Michael Kirkbride as a lore consultant to make their universe weird, and that was the best decision they ever made. They've been coasting on his efforts ever since.
>>12652690>They hired Michael Kirkbride as a lore consultantFalse
>>12652690t. Kirkbride
>>12652683>It's like how south americans kept making ps2 games.Releasing bootleg PES romhacks n burned dvds isn't making new games
>>12652690kirkbride's contributions to tes are massively overstated, and significantly overrated. that doesn't mean he's bad or anything, his writing is good and i'm glad he worked on the series, but some people act like he's a god that wrote literally everything interesting about the setting which is just stupid
>>12653075Not sure what that has anything to do with anything, but thanks for the reply.
>>12650887Only on modern hardware. It's fine on an old Windows machine, and ran very smoothly at the time. It's one of the quirky games designed to be played on 'Dos in Windows 95' that current VMs need huge amounts of processing power to run well.In terms of how it was received at the time - pretty favourably. It's one of the first relatively open world full 3D action adventures I remember playing. The world has obviously moved on now.
>>12653780Would 86box run it better than dosbox?
>>12653836It's been a while since I looked it up, but I remember people talking about similar issues on most VMs, give it a go and report back though; you can find the ISOs if you search.
>>12649306healthy human beings concern themselves with adventure, not numbers
>>12649306Not really, methinks the negative reputation is mostly perpetuated by e-celebs and people who've never played it. You think a fucking Skyrim fan is going to play this game? Lol get real.Notice how people keep bringing up that it's "not an RPG" like that's a bad thing? Absolutely brain dead criticism, it's shit you can read off an AI summary.
